Pride of Back Mountain
Known as the Pride of Back Mountain, the Dallas Borough is a lushly wooded community in northeastern Pennsylvania. The downtown area was recently redone, and a traffic circle now marks the borough's center. Along the loop are shops and restaurants; the library and post office are both central as well. “During the school year, you’ll see many college students walking around. It’s a small, quaint town,” says Jane Henry-Richardson, a lifetime resident and owner of Jane’s Sugar Magnolia. There are a few parks in the borough, and locals can also access nearby state parks, such as the Frances Slocum State Park.

Dallas dining and shopping
Many casual dining restaurants in Dallas serve pizza and wings. Jane’s Sugar Magnolia makes custom cakes and cookies for birthdays and other events. “Our family likes the Overbrook Pub & Grill because they have options for each of us. My son can get fish and chips, and I can get a pizza. They have great salads, too,” says Ellen Federici, who has lived and worked in Dallas since 2002. There are several locally owned shops, like Mickey’s Crafts and More, where residents can pick up handmade gifts. The Back Mountain Makery also opened recently, offering craft workshops and booths where local artisans can sell their goods. Along Memorial Highway is a Weis Markets grocery store.

The median home price is around $250,000, but they can range anywhere from $150,000 to $550,000. “The Dallas School District is very popular. As soon as something is for sale here, it’s gone,” Federici says. Common styles are ranch, split-level and barn-style residences with gambrel roofs and some newer homes with cross-gabled roof lines. Many homes have garages in front of the house or added to the side. A renovated three-bedroom ranch with a partially finished basement lists in the upper $200,000 range, and a six-bedroom home with a gambrel roof lists around $550,000. The median lot size is about 1 acre, though properties near the center are built more closely together.
