Bishop Arts is the "it" spot

Considered the go-to spot for shopping, dining and entertainment, the trendy Bishop Arts District in southwest Dallas features cuisine options from around the world, artisan coffee shops and bakeries. The neighborhood beckons to those who like everything at their fingertips, although weekends can get busy as visitors come from all over Dallas to shop, eat and explore the area. “Bishop Arts is the place to be right now. It’s a foodie’s paradise,” says Josefina Contreras, a Realtor with Value Properties, who’s been selling homes in the area for 17 years. “There’s so much to do there, whether it’s browsing the boutiques or listening to live jazz or salsa music at one of the local bars. It’s got a chill vibe, but it’s fun. It’s zoned commercial and residential, so if you live there everything is within walking distance.”

Boulevardier is a local favorite for dining

Bishop Arts District provides a plentitude of dining choices from Texas-style barbecue to Vietnamese pho, as well as a profusion of French, Spanish, Mexican and Italian cuisine. Residents are never far from a boutique, chocolatier or craft coffee shop, and daily essentials — such as picking up a prescription or groceries — are within easy reach at Fiesta Mart on Jefferson Boulevard. The community also hosts more than half a dozen medical centers and the public North Oak Cliff Branch Library. A Texas-style taste of France can be found at Boulevardier, a bistro offering an extensive wine collection. For a morning coffee or afternoon treat, Espumoso Caffe whips up flan, smoothies and lattes. And Wild Detectives offers an award-winning bookstore and bar venue combo.

The Texas Theatre plays a role in U.S. history

There are so many places to explore throughout the Bishop Arts District. Locals can check out local and national music talent at The Kessler Theater, or shop at an eclectic “man cave” of antique industrial tools, coins and toys while enjoying a beer at DFW M’Antiques. Other popular pastimes include catching a cult classic at the Texas Theatre, where Lee Harvey Oswald was arrested after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Instagrammers delight in murals throughout the neighborhood, such as the Love Equation Wall on Madison Avenue.

Bishop Arts offers homes in a variety of styles

Standalone homes in Bishop Arts District are not cookie-cutter. Along its residential streets with sidewalks and shade trees, styles vary from small bungalows with brightly painted siding to meticulously restored turn-of-the-century Craftsman charmers to large, modern new-construction homes with four or more bedrooms. There are also condominium options in the northern part of the neighborhood. The median home price here hovers around $500,000. A two-bedroom, two-bath may cost around $300,000, while a six-bedroom, six-bath may fetch more than $1 million. “The properties that go on the market don’t last very long,” Contreras says. “Things sell within days on the market.”

Spend a day on the river at Trammell Crow Park

Around 4 miles north of Bishop Arts District, Trammell Crow Park sits next to the Sylvan Avenue Bridge within the grassy oasis of the Trinity River greenbelt. Trammell Crow parkgoers can use the park’s boat launch and trailer parking to enjoy a day of canoeing or kayaking on the river. Trammell Crow Park features more than 6 miles of walking trails along the Trinity Skyline and Trinity Levee Top Loop trails, which connect with other trails coursing through the city. Echoing the creative spirit of the Bishop Arts District, Trammell Crow Park is dotted with whimsical stone cow sculptures and park benches. Offering sweeping vistas of the distant Dallas skyline, Trammell Crow Park is also a favorite place for locals to watch Fourth of July fireworks or fly kites in the wide-open fields.

Celebrate Bastille Day on North Bishop Avenue

In honor of the Bishop Arts District’s historical roots in the French colony La Réunion that settled here in the 1850s, the community celebrates Bastille Day every July 14th. North Bishop Avenue is closed to through traffic, and French music plays while neighbors and tourists enjoy French food and shop at local vendors’ booths. In February, residents can run in the annual Dash for the Beads 5K Race, which coincides with the Go Oak Cliff Mardi Gras Parade, another event of French origin.
