Everybody knows everybody,” says Amy Brunet, a longtime resident and owner of Brunet & Company Real Estate. “We have people who move from out of state who immediately get involved with the town because they feel the love.” Brunet adds that having family-friendly community events, multiple options for schools and being close to Massachusetts and Rhode Island are big draws for the enclave. “It’s close to all the major routes to get to large cities like Boston. It’s about an hour and 15 minutes away.”
Danielson blends history with modernity, giving former textile mills and warehouses a new purpose. Along with several churches, the borough is home to the historic Temple Beth Israel. The 75-year-old synagogue, founded to serve Holocaust survivors, is known for fostering interfaith dialogue throughout northeastern Connecticut.

Killingly Town Hall anchors the Danielson Main Street Historic District, a walkable downtown that is home to pubs, coffee houses and boutique shops housed in late 19th-century red brick buildings. Danielson Surplus Sales is a mainstay known for its collection of work boots and apparel for the last 50 years. Brunet says bibliophiles travel from around the country to browse the shelves of used books at Pourings and Passages. Nearby, New York Pizza Co. pairs pizza with pints of craft beer in its tavern-style digs, while Pizza Pizzazz is known for its casual vibe and brick oven Italian-style pies. “They have very different pizza and very different atmospheres, but they’re right across from each other,” Brunet says. National retailers and Stop & Shop draw shoppers to Killingly Commons, a few miles north of the borough. Big Y World Class Market is another grocery option. The region’s locally grown produce and artisan-crafted goods bring residents to the Northeast Connecticut Farmers Market, held in Danielson at Killingly Public Library on Saturdays during the growing season.

Lot sizes vary widely, with some homes sitting on less than a tenth of an acre and others on several acres. “Most of our buyers are from out of state,” Brunet says. “You get a lot more bang for your buck here than in Massachusetts.” Single-family home prices range from $200,000 to $530,000. Condos are also available from $120,000 to $195,000. FEMA flood maps show homes along the waterways rest in and against regulatory floodways.

Public parks and outdoor adventure in Danielson
Davis Park is the borough’s central green space, featuring a gazebo and a short walking path often used for dog walks. When decorated for the holiday season, it frequently serves as the backdrop for family photos. In the summer, the park hosts Second Saturdays, which fills the area with vendors, food trucks and live music. “We have activities for the kids and inflatable axe throwing. It’s a hoot,” Brunet says. Owen Bell Park hosts youth softball and baseball leagues, and is the site of the local skate park. Lions Park offers a playground, while Mitchell D. Phaiah Dog Park provides family dogs a place to run around off-leash. The dog park sits along the Quinebaug River Trail, which parallels its namesake river for walks and bike rides. The path switches back and forth from pavement to dirt and has several scenic overlooks and a canoe launch. Brunet says Old Furnace State Park is one of the more popular state parks in the area because of its hiking trails that lead to cliffs, which offer views of the lush landscape. Fishing and kayaking are popular activities along the Fivemile River.

A variety of public schools in Killingly
Killingly Public Schools serves Danielson and earns a B-minus overall rating from
Niche. Killingly Central receives a C-plus and teaches kindergarteners and first graders, while Killingly Memorial gets a C-plus and offers second through fourth grades. The district’s fifth through eighth graders can attend the C-plus-rated Killingly Intermediate. Killingly High earns a B-minus and hosts the district’s Agricultural Education Center. “The high school also has a state championship-winning football team. It’s a big deal for us,” Brunet says.
Other public education options include Harvard H. Ellis Technical High, a C-plus-rated public school that provides a foundation for students interested in skilled trades, and the B-plus-rated Quinebaug Middle College Magnet High. It shares a campus with Connecticut State Community College Quinebaug Valley and offers students the option to earn transferable college credits while getting their high school diploma. St. James School is a private option. The Catholic school, not yet rated by Niche, offers prekindergarten through seventh grade.

A very Killingly Halloween
Danielson swells with visitors in the week leading up to Halloween. “We’ve become the spooktacular capital of Connecticut,” says Brunet, who serves as the president of the Killingly Business Association and is on the board of directors for the Northeastern Connecticut Chamber of Commerce. The town hosts events throughout the week leading up to Halloween, from a free movie screening to haunted tours. But the big event is the Spooktacular Lights & Sights, which draws in families from across the region. It all starts with trick-or-treating on Main Street before a block party at Davis Park. The festivities culminate with an evening parade through Danielson that features dozens of floats lit up for the holiday.
Highway access and bus service in Killingly
Interstate 395 and U.S. Route 6 hug Danielson, making it a convenient location for commutes to nearby cities like Providence, Rhode Island, roughly 30 miles away. “Providence is half an hour away. You can get to Hartford, our capital, in about 45 minutes,” Brunet says. Northeastern Connecticut Transit District buses stop along Main Street and take riders to destinations like Killingly Commons. Windham Region Transit District provides bus service from downtown Danielson to the University of Connecticut, about 25 miles west.
