Greater Washington suburb with rural appeal
Darnestown sits right on the doorstep of the Ag Reserve, a designated area that makes up about a third of the land in Montgomery County. Residents here can quickly find themselves surrounded by farmland, where they can spend their weekends indulging in activities like sampling wines or going apple picking in an orchard during the warmer seasons. “I think Darnestown’s unique in that it has the amenities and convenience of the suburbs, but it touches right on our beautiful rural communities,” says Montgomery County Council member Marilyn Balcombe, whose district includes Darnestown. “I live close by, right next to Darnestown. It’s just a really unique spot.” Located just over 20 miles north of the nation’s capital, Darnestown makes up one of the many Maryland suburbs in the greater Washington metropolitan area. The community also appeals to those seeking a little more space from not just the capital itself, but also other Montgomery County neighbors like Gaithersburg and Germantown. Over the years, Darnestown has become one of the residential destinations for employees of the North I-270 Technology Corridor, a cluster of technology and biotech companies. “I love Darnestown. I feel like it’s one of the few communities that’s been relatively untouched over the last 30 years because it’s built up with spacious lots,” says Joshua Pratt, a Realtor with Long & Foster Real Estate, who’s made several sales in Darnestown. “You get the best of both worlds because you’re really on the cusp of suburbia and country living with the agriculture reserve in upper Montgomery County.”
Darnestown neighborhood offers stunning homes with spacious yards.

For those looking to spend less, there are a few smaller 2,000-square-foot ranch-style homes here, that can fall between $600,000 and $800,000.

Everyone is very connected in this area. We recently had a drive to try and find a match for a local child with blood cancer for a bone marrow transplant. Events and projects like this are common in this area, everyone loves to lend a helping hand.

If you want a close community there are houses that are all very close to each other. If you want a larger lawn and driveway, there are also houses that have that aspect.

It's the suburbs, but it is so close to the nearby states, popular attractions, the nation's capitol, popular sports teams that you never get tired of being home. What's amazing is that people here have an incredible sense of pride in where they live, and in our state of Maryland and our county - Montgomery County. We take pride in the little things; farmers markets, sunflowers in the summer, back roads to drive on, all four seasons... And we take pride in the bigger things; our unbeatable school system, the Baltimore Ravens, DC, Virginia, and Old Bay seasoning. As always, high school students can't wait to leave home, but home this place will always be. I absolutely always look forward to coming home to this environment, where I can see my old friends, eat my favorite foods, but also experience new stores and restaurants. This place will always be the same old home but continues to surprise me with its constant growth and development of new and improved communities, restaurants, and people. While I don't know what lies ahead for me, I know that I would be wonderfully happy raising my own family where I grew up.
