Waterfront living

Like an arm reaching out into Buzzards Bay, the Dartmouth Community Park neighborhood occupies the southernmost part of the South Dartmouth peninsula, creating a picturesque backdrop for residents who love to spend time outdoors. “People in the area gravitate to the outdoors, even in the winter, because it’s just such a beautiful place,” says Realtor and area resident Molly Armando. And given that it’s surrounded on three sides by water, much of that outdoor activity centers on aquatic recreation. “A lot of people here have the ability to reach the coast, straight from their house, so that’s a huge appeal,” says Ellie Wickes, a Realtor with Sotheby's International Realty in Westport. “Part of South Dartmouth used to be an old seaport, and you’ve got the New Bedford Yacht Cub, with cute little shops on the outskirts. Everything feels geared around the water.”

Outdoor activities galore

Both Anthony’s Beach and Jones Park Beach provide public access for those looking to have a little fun in the sun. Because of the protected nature of Buzzards Bay, the waves here are gentle enough for the whole family to enjoy. Jones Park Beach offers the added attractions found in the adjacent Jones Park, with a playground, softball fields and picnic tables. Boat owners will find all the requisite services at South Wharf Yacht Yard and Marina, which offers slips up to 130 feet and full-service maintenance on-site. Those who want to get out on the water but don’t have their own boat can rent one – or a kayak or a stand-up paddleboard – at Nauti Jane’s Boat Rentals located at the marina. Further inland is Dartmouth Community Park, where kids can frolic on the playground while adults recline on a nearby bench, perhaps with a good book from the Southworth Library, next door to the playground.

Dartmouth Public Schools

Dartmouth Community Park is districted to Dartmouth Public Schools, which earns an overall grade of B-plus from Niche. Students can attend Joseph DeMello Elementary, Dartmouth Middle and Dartmouth High School. DeMello earns a B-plus from Niche, Dartmouth Middle earns a B-plus and Dartmouth High earns an A-minus. “Dartmouth High School is a big draw for people moving to the neighborhood because it’s such a good school,” says Wickes. In addition to a rigorous academic curriculum, students at Dartmouth High School have the opportunity to play 27 different varsity-level sports and the school has a very active fine arts program. Alternatively, parents can avail themselves of some of the nation’s best private schools, including nearby Tabor Academy, which earns an A-plus from Niche.

Local dining and retail options

Historically, Dartmouth Community Park has not been a dining destination, but recent additions to the restaurant landscape have changed that perception. Little Moss is a must for foodies, according to Armando. Featuring a menu that changes daily with availability of ingredients, Little Moss has built a reputation for superb offerings since opening in 2015. For a slightly more casual bite, Armando recommends The Sail Loft, where diners can choose from surf or turf, including two different preparations of a traditional New England lobster roll. And diners in the know always save room for ice cream from Dockside, where they serve homemade ice cream – including vegan options – along with frappes (just don’t call them milkshakes), sundaes and ice cream sodas. Home cooks can pick up a limited assortment of specialty ingredients from Farm & Coast Market, but for more comprehensive grocery shopping, Stop & Shop is located a little more than a mile north. For home necessities, both Walmart Supercenter and Home Depot are located about 10 miles north. Dartmouth Community Park is home to several local shops with offerings from the practical to the decorative. For beach-themed clothing and accessories, locals like to stop in at Padanaram Outfitters, and Flora Style has the latest fashions for women. Village Needlepoint has all the necessary supplies for needlepointers from beginner to expert, including canvases, fibers and needles. But when only a major shopping mall will suffice, the Dartmouth Mall is 5 miles away.

A place to call home

Home prices in Dartmouth Community Park, while well above national averages, are comparatively lower than similar waterfront neighborhoods throughout New England. The median home price here is $732,500, and buyers can expect to pay an average of $333 per square foot. Cape Cods and colonial-inspired homes dominate the housing landscape, and as one might expect, closer to the water means higher prices. Inland homes tend to sell for between $400,000 and $850,000, while waterfront properties can go for multiples of millions. A one-bedroom/one-bathroom bungalow can sell for $375,000, and prices can go up to $1.5 million for a four-bedroom/four-bathroom Cape Cod with its own in-ground pool, tennis court and deeded beach access.

Getting out of town

When the need to get out of town arises, Route 6 is about 4 miles north of the neighborhood, offering direct travel to New Bedford. A little further north is Interstate 195, offering access to Providence 30 miles to the west and Cape Cod 50 miles to the east.
