Rustic meets suburban in Westport
Situated between Fall River to the west and New Bedford to the east, Westport is a historic neighborhood that provides residents with what might best be described as a rustic suburban lifestyle. “Westport is, on the whole, a fairly rural community,” says Ellie Wickes, a Realtor with Sotheby's International Realty in Westport. “But it still has big grocery stores, banks and more of a town center than truly rural areas.” With Route 6 less than a mile north, residents here can be on their way to virtually anywhere in New England with relative ease, and New Bedford’s bustling downtown is just over 10 miles away. At the same time, homes here are on larger-than-average lots with plentiful mature trees throughout, lending a sense of pastoral serenity to the neighborhood.

Get outside in Westport
Nature lovers will find a lot to like about Westport. The Westport River serves as the neighborhood’s western boundary, giving residents easy access to the water. For those who prefer to spend their time on terra firma, the ominous-sounding (but safe) Destruction Brook Woods is a popular getaway. With 280 acres of wooded forest to explore and an easy 5-mile loop trail winding its way through the area, Destruction Brook Woods is great for those who want to get out and enjoy nature. Within the dense expanse of trees lies the area’s namesake Destruction Brook, which once served as the power source for local mills that served as the backbone of Westport’s early economy.
With over 60 shops and restaurants, and plenty of entertainment, Dartmouth Mall has it all
Close-by urban conveniences
For family-friendly entertainment that feels a little more urban, residents can head to Caddy Shack, which features a double-deck driving range, a miniature golf course, bumper boats, batting cages and more.
Speaking of a more urban feel, Westport offers residents nearby access to Route 6 and all the commercial establishments along that major thoroughfare. “It’s very close to the retail corridor, despite the rural nature of the area,” says local real estate broker Jay Lanagan. “That combination is one of the major reasons people choose to live there.” Just east of the neighborhood on Route 6 is Persey’s Place, a local chain featuring breakfast and lunch classics. Another local favorite is Cask & Pig Kitchen and Alehouse, where the menu features pub grub classics like trashcan nachos and more refined entrees like mango salmon, as well as 24 different beers on tap and 22 TVs.
The nearby Dartmouth Mall offers one-stop shopping for those living in Westport: Stop & Shop for groceries, Target for home necessities and 71 different retailers that include Old Navy, Foot Locker and American Eagle. The mall is also home to a 12-screen AMC movie theater and multiple dining options.

Homes on large lots
The median home price in Westport is around $675,000, and buyers should expect to pay an average of $370 per square foot. Homes here don’t often come up for sale, though, so potential buyers may need to exercise patience while they wait for a home to come on the market. Lot sizes are larger than many other neighborhoods in the area; the median lot size in Westport is over 50,000 square feet, whereas the state median is just over 19,000 square feet. Smaller bungalows and ranch-style homes can range in price from $205,000 to $535,000, and larger colonial-style, farmhouse-style and contemporary homes can range from $600,000 to $2.8 million. The neighborhood also has a low crime rate, with an overall CAP index score of 1, as compared to the national average of 4.
Westport Middle School and Westport High School are housed in the same building with excellence.
Westport Public Schools
Westport Public Schools receives an overall rating of B from Niche. Westport Elementary and the merged Westport Junior/Senior High School both receive a B-minus rating. The $97 million combined school opened in fall 2021, with shared spaces like a media center sitting between the two halves. Students there can participate in any of over 20 school-sponsored clubs, and they have the opportunity to play 16 varsity-level sports. Parents also have multiple private school options in the area, including nearby Portsmouth Abbey School, which earns an A-plus rating from Niche.
