David Stutzman claimed land in Conemaugh Township back in 1831 and founded Davidsville. The area saw rapid growth, with stores and farms popping up over the next few years. Centuries later, Davidsville still has active farms that are as old as the town and a small community that gets together at local churches and restaurants. Jean Magdelinic, a member of the Conemaugh Township Historical Society and lifelong Davidsville resident, says, “Davidsville is a wonderful place to live. It’s a small town surrounded by farms, like pig and cow farms and fields with growing corn. And, everyone knows each other.” An area that was once booming with mines now sees new residents moving in and staying close to the schools.

Homes from decades past
New residents who want to live close to the Conemaugh schools can find move-in ready homes and land available for new construction. “I’ve lived in Davidsville essentially all my life. I moved to Washington, D.C., after I graduated high school and lived there for two years, but I moved back here. The area’s grown considerably over the years.” Most homes are Cape Cods, split-levels and ranches built in the 1970s and 1980s, but there are also Colonial Revivals built in the early 1900s. The roads don’t have sidewalks, meaning residents have more yard space as the grass extends to the pavement. Each home sits on a large yard, and neighbors are often spread out from each other. Prices here range from $100,000 to $250,000.

Go-to restaurants in town
Thomahawk Deli & Grill has been in the neighborhood for over 13 years. The restaurant has a breakfast, lunch and dinner menu, but anyone can stop in for some fresh smoked beef jerky or sausages. Hunters can also drop off and pay a fee for the expert butchers to process their deer. Down the street, Silver Bell Ice Cream is open April through October and serves Perry's Ice Cream soft serve through a walk-up window. There’s a new flavor to try every week. Magdelinic says the Go Moore Store gas station is the place to catch up on town gossip and find locally made products, like honey or maple syrup. Some shop at Dollar General, but most travel up to the Walmart Supercenter or Giant Eagle Supermarket in Johnstown for groceries.
