A horse-friendly community in Davie

The private enclave of Imagination Farms sits on the southwestern side of Davie, a small Broward County town about 20 miles from Fort Lauderdale. Quiet, walkable streets and nearby parks make this an extremely pedestrian-friendly area, although it’s not uncommon for residents to travel on four legs instead of two. “We have a beautiful equestrian trail,” says neighborhood resident Tracey Douglas, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Realty. “For those of us that live along the back of the community, it’s beautiful to take in the horses as they pass by.” The community, established in the late 1990s, is known for its low turnover rate. “Many people that live here, including myself, are original owners. They see this as a place to have their kids grow up,” Douglas says. “[The neighborhood] also has fairly low association fees, which I think impacts people’s decision to buy.” The active community association helps maintain common areas like pocket parks, preserving the neighborhood’s tidy appearance. Multiple houses of worship — including half a dozen churches, a Hindu temple and a synagogue — are nearby. Residents also have easy access to highways and shopping centers along Griffin Road, adding to the area’s convenience.

Ranch and Mediterranean styles are common

Built throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, the neighborhood’s single-family homes showcase a mix of Spanish Eclectic, Mediterranean Revival and ranch styles, with many properties sporting red tile roofs. Pristine, landscaped lawns and groomed hedges separate these typically five-bedroom, 4,000-square-foot homes, many of which include backyard pools. Prices range from $1.3 million to $1.7 million, but Douglas says recently renovated properties can top $2 million. Lots are typically a builder’s acre — exactly 40,000 square feet — making them both spacious and consistent. The neighborhood’s sidewalk-lined streets weave around artificial reservoirs, offering peaceful lakeside views and rare alligator sightings. The reservoirs, which Douglas says are maintained by the South Broward Drainage District, help regulate overflow after heavy rains, reducing the risk of flooding. As with all of South Florida, hurricanes are possible here, so residents should be prepared to install hurricane shutters and obtain flood insurance if necessary.

Vista View Park has a miniature airfield

The community includes five small pocket parks with playsets and basketball courts, at least one of which is being converted to accommodate pickleball. “The parks also serve as the school bus stops,” Douglas says. Aptly named Vista View Park features the highest hilltop in Broward County, making it a popular launch point for paragliders and a panoramic spot to catch surrounding fireworks on the Fourth of July. This 272-acre park has lakes, an equestrian trail, two shaded playgrounds and an airfield where pilots can fly remote-controlled planes. “On the weekends, [the park] is always full of birthday parties,” Douglas says. “The kids run and play on the playgrounds while the adults are in the pavilion trying to stay cool.” To the north of the park is Camp Elmore, one of the approved camping sites of South Florida’s Boy Scouts of America. Long Key Natural Area and Nature Center is an important habitat for local wildlife. It also offers educational opportunities for kids. It sits on an oak hammock that extends east to include Flamingo Gardens, one of South Florida’s oldest botanical gardens. Founded in 1927, this 60-acre space is home to a wildlife sanctuary, a historic house museum and more than 3,000 species of flora. Additional walking trails and a community garden are nearby in the 160-acre Robbins Preserve.

Davie’s town-wide events

The town of Davie organizes a handful of events throughout the year, many of which are held about 5 miles away at the Bamford Sports Complex. Highlights include the annual Fun on the Fourth event, a Fourth of July celebration with music, carnival rides and fireworks. The community has celebrated the annual Orange Blossom Festival in February for more than 80 years. This multiday tradition includes a parade at the sports complex and a rodeo at Bergeron Rodeo Grounds. The rodeo grounds also host a spring Jazz Festival, showcasing local music, fine art and food.

International eateries at Regency Square

In addition to Publix Super Market, Regency Square Shopping Plaza hosts multiple medical, dental and real estate offices. It’s also home to local restaurants such as Wunderbar German Kitchen & Biergarten, a lively sports bar with a pool table and a dog-friendly patio. This German-American eatery serves homemade bratwurst, schnitzel and a lengthy draft beer menu. A few doors down, Shimuja specializes in authentic Japanese cuisine with nearly a dozen traditional ramen noodle soup recipes. Family-owned Southwest Ranches Farmer’s Market offers a range of fresh produce, local dairy products and meat from its location at Bloom Nursery. Across the highway in Weston, shoppers will find another Publix, The Home Depot, Walgreens and more casual dining options. The closest medical center, Weston Hospital, is also here, about a mile from The Home Depot.

Close to I-75 and I-595

From Griffin Road, drivers can easily reach Interstates 75 and 595. “It’s very easy to get everywhere,” Douglas says. While I-595 heads east toward Dania Beach, I-75 takes a sharp turn just north of Weston, heading west across the Everglades toward Naples. Broward County bus service is sparse in Davie, but residents will find stops about 2 miles away off Sterling Road. Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport is about 20 miles away.
