Northridge, fully sufficient but close to downtown

Just north of Dayton's city limits, Northridge is an expansive unincorporated community within the Harrison Township. The neighborhood is slightly over 3 miles long and is part of the Dayton metropolitan area, but it has its own school district. Homebuyers will find parks, commercial businesses and industrial complexes within the neighborhood, and Interstate 75 runs directly through its center, offering convenient access to downtown Dayton.

Catching flicks at Dixie Twin Drive-In

Northridge is a buzzy suburb just a few miles from the city's center, with many business districts filled with shopping, dining and entertainment venues. There are convenience stores, Dollar Tree, Aldi, Walmart and Sam's Club for discount essentials and groceries. Restaurants are diverse, from fast-casual spots to more upscale dining. Marion's Piazza is a long-running counter-serve Italian chain, while George's serves American comfort food and a few Greek classics. Nationally recognized names, like A&W Restaurant and LongHorn Steakhouse, are all over the neighborhood. Kids and adults alike love Scene 75, an entertainment venue with mini golf, go-karts, laser tag, bounce houses, bumper cars and bowling. From April to October, Dixie Twin Drive-In becomes a go-to for movie nights. The drive-in theater has two screens that play nostalgic and modern films on weekends and up to six nights per week during the summer. The site also hosts a Sunday morning flea market and special events, like early screenings of new movies. On the east side of Northridge are commercial businesses, industry warehouses, manufacturing and trucking companies.

Growing a bounty at Wegerzyn Gardens MetroPark

The neighborhood has plenty of parks in its boundaries and nearby. While on school property, Northridge Community Park is open to the public for group sports and playground activities. Across the street, The Rat Skatepark lets beginners and experienced skaters practice their skills. Little League baseball teams meet at Grafton Kennedy Park for practices and games. At the very south of the neighborhood, runners and cyclists share the Great Miami River Recreational Trail along the riverbank. Directly beside Northridge is Wegerzyn Gardens MetroPark, an 88-acre green space with ten carefully curated formal gardens. "The formal gardens are really popular and distinctive for the area. There aren't a whole lot of gardens like that around Dayton," says Rebecca Straight, an administrative assistant at Five Rivers MetroParks. "Half an hour, 45 minutes, people will drive to come to Wegerzyn. I've even heard of people up in Englewood coming to our gardens." She explains that Wegerzyn's community garden plots are rare in the city. Seasonal and organic plots available, letting locals choose what and when to plant. There are also various nature trails and a Children's Discovery Garden where kids explore whimsical-themed habitats. The neighborhood is also within 3 miles of the Stillwater River Recreational Trail, Triangle Park and the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery, an all-ages archaeological park and science museum.

Post-war homes being rehabbed

Most of Northridge's homes were built during the post-World War II construction boom, so the area has many one and one-and-half-story ramblers and Cape Cods, with the occasional Craftsman thrown in the mix. Bungalows, two-story properties and even multi-family homes are also common. Home prices range from $45,000 to $195,000, depending on the property's condition. Investment properties are purchased relatively quickly, as many "buyers are very interested in rehabbing," says Traci Martin, a Realtor at Howard Hanna Real Estate Services who's sold in the area before. In the south, lawns are small, and homes are very close together. In the north, lots are larger, and homes sit farther from the street. Some homes in the center of the neighborhood have elevated lots with concrete stairs leading up to the front door. Streets are green, with mature trees and shrubbery decorating most yards. Only a few residential areas have sidewalks.

Catching the highway to downtown or the airport

Interstate 75, Dayton's primary north-south thoroughfare, passes through Northridge. While it brings excess noise and occasional traffic to the area, it connects residents to the rest of the region and nearby cities like Cincinnati. Drivers also use alternate routes along North Dixie Drive and Needmore Road to get around. Downtown Dayton is only 4 miles south, and Dayton International Airport is less than 9 miles north. Public transit options include bus routes running through the neighborhood.

Northridge has its own school district

Since Northridge is not officially part of Dayton, the neighborhood has its own school district. Northridge Local School District has four schools that all share one building, including the preschool. Northridge Elementary School has a B-minus Niche rating, while Northridge Middle School earns a C-plus. The C-rated Northridge High School has an active athletics department, with basketball and football games pulling in sizable crowds.
