Revitalization on the Great Miami River
Settled against the west banks of the Great Miami and Stillwater rivers, Riverdale is a humble, historic community known for its affordable housing and proximity to downtown Dayton. In the shadow of the loss of Dayton’s manufacturing industry, Riverdale and much of northwestern Dayton experienced suburban flight and varying degrees of poverty, leading to stagnation and neglected and condemned homes. However, citywide initiatives such as 2020’s Northwest Dayton Neighborhoods Vision have led to a slow but steady revitalization in the neighborhood, which residents hope will fully reinvigorate the community with a new sense of purpose and aesthetic quality.

Canoeing on the Stillwater River
Nearby Island MetroPark is a 43-acre urban park with hiking trails, elaborate splash pads, river access and a bandshell for live performances and concerts. The Dayton Canoe Club promotes canoeing, kayaking, and other paddle sports on the Great Miami River from the same clubhouse they founded in the fall of 1912. For the occasional Little League game, locals head across the river and beyond Island Park Reservoir to Kettering Field, which contains 15 baseball and softball diamonds, a turf football field, and several walking trails.
Visitors of Island Metropark enjoy fishing in the river as a family.

Promoting heart health at Island MetroPark
In addition to hosting weekly science and outdoor events, Island MetroPark features annual festivals and activities like the African American Wellness Walk, a 5k dedicated to promoting heart health awareness within the African American community. The run has been a popular local event since its inception in 2000. It has raised thousands of dollars for medical research while bringing the community together for fun and a little exercise.
Affordable historic homes on North Main Street
Lush, shady trees line timeworn streets throughout the area’s gentle hills swell. Small front and backyards are common, though driveways are not, necessitating street parking in most sections of town. Homes are older, often requiring considerable renovation, though few are actively in the direction of becoming condemned. “It’s mostly older homes,” says Miranda Biedenharn, an agent with Comey & Shepherd who’s served the area since 2004. “Very affordable, but a lot of them need serious work.” Foursquare, Prairie and Craftsman-style homes are popular, many built during the turn of the 20th century and even earlier. A Cape Cod fixer-upper from the late 1800s can start in the low-$20,000s, while centennial foursquares reach the mid-$80,000s. A fully renovated Craftsman can reach the high $100,000s.

Casual dining at The Burger Master
For a casual dining experience surrounded by antique restaurant chic style, Benjamin’s The Burger Master has been serving burgers, wings, steak and more in Riverdale since its opening over 40 years ago. However, shopping beyond the basics might be a little more complicated as the community continues to feel economic hardship. “There’s no shopping in the area,” says Miranda Biedenharn. “You’re going to have to drive further out of town for something like that.” The nearest Walmart Supercenter is 8.5 miles south in nearby Moraine.
