Though the neighborhood of Twin Towers has fallen on hardships since the recession of 2008, it’s recently been experiencing a full-fledged rejuvenation led in no small part by the locals themselves. “You don’t have to move to live in a better neighborhood,” says Leslie Sheward, who’s been the Twin Towers Neighborhood Association president for 15 years. “You just need to get involved.” Neighboring the more affluent neighborhoods of South Park and Walnut Hills, Twin Towers might have its work cut out for it. However, local diversity and hospitality combined with investments in education suggest that the community is growing in all the right directions. “We’re the most diverse neighborhood in the county,” says Sheward. “We’re incredibly open and welcoming.” Add in a short commute to downtown Dayton, and it makes for one of the area’s latest “up-and-coming” neighborhoods.
Turn-of-the-century historic homes
Local homes tend toward a historic bent, with some constructed as early as the late 1800s. This, combined with the right skills and elbow grease, can make for stunning restorations at best and shuttered derelicts at worst. Cape Cods, bungalows, Craftsman and Stick style homes are the most common, with Colonial and Tudor styles occasionally appearing. Driveways are uncommon, as are sizeable front yards. Wide sidewalks connect most residential areas, making the community reasonably walkable. A fixer-upper Craftsman can start in the mid-$30,000s, while a renovated Stick style home can reach the mid-$90,000s. A bungalow with a fenced-in backyard and driveway will run in the mid-$100,000s.

Diverse communities, diverse schools
Ohio’s Open Enrollment policy states that parents can decide which schools are best for their children beyond designated school districts. A student could begin their education at Ruskin Elementary School, which has a C-minus and a student body that truly reflects the local community. “There are 21 different languages spoken at Ruskin—it’s that diverse,” says Leslie Sheward. From there, students can continue on to Stivers School for the Arts, which has a B-plus. The Miami Valley Childcare Development Center is currently under construction and will begin serving the preschoolers of Twin Towers and Bomberger in 2025.
Stivers School for the Arts has consistently been named a top performing school.
