Get away from the hustle and bustle with a home in Wayne Township. This Armstrong County community, which covers the borough of Dayton, is known for its rural character, full of wide-open space and serenity. “It’s more like a one-street town,” says local Realtor Sandy Bracken of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices The Preferred Realty, who has been selling in the area since 2007. “There’s a post office, there’s a little store there, a feed mill, a hardware store. It’s just more rural. There’s not as many close neighbors for the most part unless you’re in the town of Dayton.” Wayne Township’s peaceful atmosphere is part of its aura. Yet this rural enclave offers its share of attractions to enjoy, too, all just about an hour outside of Pittsburgh.

Annual events at the local campground
Dayton Elementary is in the center of town, not too far from Dayton Country Market, a close-by place to grab quick groceries or prepared food, including breakfast, pizza and subs. Residents can pick up food here before some outdoor fun at Milton Loop Campground, a 28-acre space with cabin rentals and access to Mahoning Creek. Mahoning Creek is a fishing hotspot, for trout, catfish and more. There’s also a camp store on site with ice cream, groceries and supplies for camping.
Bracken says the campground hosts an annual Bigfoot BBQ UFO Festival, too. The festival, held in June, features a variety of speakers, food vendors and merchandise booths. Milton Loop Campground is down the street from Country Palace Bar, another place to grab a bite to eat. People love the wings at Country Palace Bar, and there are almost 20 sauces to choose from, from honey mustard to sweet and tangy barbecue.
Golfers will enjoy the township’s White Oak Golf Course, which Bracken says is very popular. This 18-hole public circuit is carved into the rolling natural landscape. White Oak hosts multiple tournaments each year, and all-day golf with a cart can be booked for just $25 from October to March.
The Dayton Country Market is Wayne Township's go-to source for convenience and groceries.
