Suburban convenience in DeWitt

DeWitt blends suburban comfort with a small-town ambiance about 6 miles east of Syracuse. “DeWitt has a much-desired school district, proximity to major highways, and there’s a Wegmans for shopping, which is very convenient,” says Edward Glassberg, an associate broker with Coldwell Banker Prime Properties, who has sold homes in the area since 1985. Like much of upstate New York, the region is known for its heavy snowfall, with a yearly average of nearly 114 inches. However, surrounding state parks, trails along the Erie Canal and glistening, swimmable lakes in the summer make the harsh winters bearable. Within minutes of all Syracuse offers, DeWitt features quaint homes on quiet streets with easy access to the great outdoors.

Colonials and Cape Cods in an upstate New York suburb

Most residential streets are west of Erie Boulevard, with quiet roads that feature a range of architectural styles. Colonials sit next to Cape Cods, split-levels, and ranch-style homes that display classic northeastern features like clapboard siding in various colors. Prices can range from the mid $100,000s for a home that needs some TLC to $450,000 for an updated house. “Sections of the town of DeWitt were built in the 1920s and 1930s, then new developments were made to expand the town in the 60s and 70s,” Glassberg says. “There are still new builds near the Jamesville-Dewitt School District, but there’s only so much room to grow there now.” Nearly every property has a fenced-in backyard and driveway, while only some feature an attached garage, and others offer detached garages. Due to surrounding streams, areas around Interstate 481 are prone to flooding. Additionally, residents have been impacted by smokey air from Canadian wildfires in recent years.
