Residents of Daisy Lake are surrounded by nature
DeLand is classic inland Florida, with its swamps, rivers and weather-run houses. Its Daisy Lake community is where snowbirds camp in their RVs, pontoon boats launch into the St. John’s River and homebuilders snatch up pieces of property to build their dream houses. “My family has lived in DeLand for more than 31 years,” says Jennifer Bluff, manager of the Holly Bluff Marina in Daisy Lake. “We love the old oak trees, the wildlife that roams around, the small-town feel and the sense of community. In times of crisis such as disaster weather events, our neighbors are always first to respond to lend a hand.”
Tristina Hill, a broker with Southern Exclusive Realty, who’s been selling homes in the area for more than a decade, says the community is a great spot for people who are looking for acreage, as most properties boast more than half an acre. “You go back in time there,” she says. “You feel like you’re a part of nature.” While Daisy Lake’s appeal lies in its rural vibe, the area is just 5 miles from shopping and dining in downtown DeLand.

St. John's River and a bird sanctuary
Daisy Lake is a largely residential area in a marsh. Federal land providing a sanctuary for migratory birds spans 22,000 acres on its north side. In the bird sanctuary, called the Lake Woodruff National Wildlife Refuge, locals can bike, hike and ride horses on about 15 miles of trails alongside turtles, snakes and largemouth bass. The St. John’s River, tracing the neighborhood’s southwestern edge, is popular with boaters, fishermen and swimmers, and can be accessed at Ed Stone Park and Hontoon Island State Park. Several marinas and campsites sit along the skinny waterway, making the inland area popular with tourists who love boating.

Daisy Lake offers vintage houses and new construction
Homes-wise, Daisy Lake has an eclectic mix. Ranch homes built from the 1960s to the '90s are the dominant style with spacious lots adorned by palm trees. It’s not hard to find properties with two to 10 acres,” Hill says. There are also contemporary homes with two-car garages within subdivisions that feature clubhouses, parks and pools. Cleared lots are for sale too, so there’s a flurry of new home construction. RV parks, popular in Florida with snowbirds, also exist.
According to the CAP Index Crime Score, Daisy Lake's overall crime score is 2 out of 10, significantly lower than the national average of 4.
Home prices typically range from $300,000 to $500,000, but larger homes with waterfront views can cost between $700,000 and $1 million. Many homeowners in Florida purchase flood insurance plans, which are typically separate from homeowners’ insurance. Since Daisy Lake includes the St. John’s River, flooding after a big storm is possible.

Shady Oak Restaurant is another riverside spot serving up frog legs and catfish sandwiches. But the community is only 5 miles from downtown DeLand, a walkable area with plenty of dining, drinking and entertainment spots. On the weekends, locals eat crispy egg rolls and udon noodles at Mongoose and then walk to the Athens Theatre for a musical or a tribute band. To stock up on groceries there’s a Winn-Dixie, 4 miles away on New York Avenue West.
