East Delano: a small southwest California suburb
East Delano is a close-knit, rural southwest California suburb 32 miles from Bakersfield. “I still see people I went to high school with,” says Vincent Lara, a Realtor with San Joaquin Realty who has been selling homes for almost two decades. His father was a broker in town and his brother Anthony is a Realtor, too. “People stay in Delano to raise kids. Many have been here for 50 years or longer.” Delano is known for its agriculture industry, specifically grape growing; in the late 1800s, the area exploded as a farming and railroad town. But the area also has a rebellious history, known for the Delano Grape Strike of 1965, led by the Filipino Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee. Today, the area still has a prominent Filipino population and an annual celebration highlighting the culture. Single-family homes and highways now occupy the land where grape farms once stood. “It’s a small area; You can get through all of Delano in maybe ten minutes,” says Anish Mohan, a multi-family unit developer with OM Development and Construction, who has worked in Delano for nearly a decade.
Most of the homes of East Delano were built in the mid to late 20th century.
