A riverport town with historic charm
Situated along the Delaware River and surrounding canals sits Delaware City, a small riverport town with a mix of coastal and colonial charm. Residents are proud to be part of this historic little community, which began to unfold in 1801. “The town shows up to community meetings,” says Realtor Mary Corcoran of Patterson Schwartz Real Estate. Corcoran has sold homes across the region for nearly five years. “They really care about their home in Delaware City.” Over 200 structures were built in the 19th and early 20th centuries, like Town Hall, which was built in 1883. Town Hall was enlisted to the National Register of Historic Places.

A mix of deep-rooted colonials and 21st century development
Most residents live in older colonials built in the early-to-mid-1900s, a few of which have been renovated into multi-family duplexes. They’re mixed in with ranch-style homes and Cape Cods made from the 1950s through the ’70s. And 21st-century development includes a few contemporary colonials with over 1,500 square feet. Several houses have small front porches overlooking leafy, manicured front lawns. Housing often costs between $150,000 and $400,000. There aren’t any mailboxes in Delaware City, so locals have to head to the local post office for their mail. Several sidewalks line the streets, and locals enjoy walks to the river or Clinton Street for dinner.

Locals browse the storefronts along Clinton Street
Delaware City is not much of a commercial town. However, a quaint town center has some local shops and restaurants along Clinton Street. Locals can get groceries at Sunset Market, shop for unique gifts and home décor at The Saltbox, order a hot meatball sub from Sabatina’s Sandwiches or stop by the Ice Cream Parlor for dessert. A resident favorite for dinner is Crabby Dick’s, a seafood restaurant and bar. The restaurant features lit outdoor seating that overlooks the Delaware and serves steamed crab legs, shrimp, and more. And groups enjoy cocktails out of 32-ounce buckets. Locals looking to shop at bigger retailers and grocery stores head to Governor’s Square Shopping Center in Bear, just 8 miles away. Here, shoppers hop in stores like ShopRite, Rainbow and Rite Aid Pharmacy.

Fun along the Delaware River
People love boating and fishing in Delaware City, and dozens of boats line the canal at Delaware City Marina. “It’s always been a fisherman’s town,” Corcoran says. “You’ll see a lot of people fishing out there.” If locals aren’t hitting the water, they’re catching river views from local parks. Park-goers walk the brick path along the river at Battery Park. While there, they take a ferry to Fort Delaware State Park on Pea Patch Island. The park was initially used to house Confederate prisoners during the Civil War. Today, it serves as a historic reminder of the past with costumed interpreters. Locals head back from the island and explore the historical sites along the self-guided Fort DuPont State Park trail. It’s home to the Diamond State Base Ball Club, an amateur 19th-century vintage baseball team that demonstrates the spirit of the game before professional baseball.
