Former canal port offers laid-back living outside Lafayette
In the 19th century, the Wabash River fueled industry in Pittsburg, powering its sawmills and accommodating steamboats. With its heyday behind it, today, Pittsburg is a rural, unincorporated community about 19 miles northeast of Lafayette, Indiana. While there is little by way of shops, restaurants, entertainment, and schools, all of that is nearby in neighboring Delphi. In place of mills and canal boats, today, the river is a venue for fishing, kayaking and canoeing. But Pittsburg is actually known for a different water source: a community spout with free-flowing spring water. "People go to Pittsburg to visit the natural spring," says Julia Leahy, Executive Director of the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce. "It seems like there is always someone there filling up jugs of water."

Fresh air and exercise at Tippecanoe Township Park
The community is surrounded by farmland — and green space is found inside it, too. Tippecanoe Township Park is a centrally-located spot for fresh air and exercise. A picnic shelter provides space for lunch under mature trees. The park also has a full-sized basketball court and a shorter basketball hoop for kids. A public boat ramp provides access to the river. "River life is the main thing — a lot of people that live there like to spend time on the water," Leahy says. In Delphi, Wabash and Erie Canal Park has a canal-boat-shaped playground with a twisty slide and lookout platform. Delphi offers hiking, biking, birdwatching and cross-country skiing with a trail network along its waterways.

Smaller styles include rectangular bungalows. There aren't many sidewalks, but there also isn't a lot of traffic. The median single-family home price is $179,000. One restaurant in Pittsburg, more options in Delphi
Pittsburg's businesses are few and far between, but a wide selection is close by in Delphi. The Dock at Delphi is Pittsburg's only restaurant, and locals are grateful for its juicy cheeseburgers, fried fish and loaded fries. Delphi has boutiques, bridal shops, shoe stores, restaurants and bars two miles east. Brick and Mortar Pub offers a cozy atmosphere with cushioned booths, brick walls and accent lighting. It serves up casual American fare like smothered ribs and a brownie a la mode for dessert. Discounted groceries are available at Save A Lot.

Bacon, bands and brews at the Indiana Bacon Festival
Annual events celebrate history and food. In Delphi, the Old Settlers Celebration dates back to the annual meeting of the county's original residents. Convenient highway access to Delphi, Monticello and Lafayette
Most residents here own a car, as nearby cities require a commute. There is no public transportation. But one big perk of Pittsburg is highway access. U.S. Highway 421 leads 13 miles north to Monticello and 2 miles east to Delphi. It connects with State Road 25, leading to Lafayette.
