Established Texoma neighborhood on the Red River
Less than 5 miles from the Oklahoma border, Sherwood Shores blends the best of both states that comprise the Lake Texoma region. Located on the Texas side of the Red River, it is one of the most established neighborhoods on the water and has dozens of midcentury lakefront cottages and bungalows. The sprawling Juniper Point Park and miles-long Cross Timbers Hiking Trail make it a popular place for nature lovers to hike, fish or boat. While the community is 16 miles from the town of Whitesboro, waterfront restaurants and small markets make it possible to stay right on the lake. A local highway crosses the river over to Oklahoma, which is home to some of the region’s best casinos and nightlife.
The Red River is a key feature of Sherwood Shores, offering opportunities for fishing, boating, and peaceful walks.
Sherwood Shores residents often gather at Marshal’s Restaurant for delicious dishes and friendly service.

Cross Timbers Trail covers miles of Texoma shoreline
Juniper Point is one of the area’s largest parks and a short walk or bike ride from most of Sherwood Shores’ residential streets. The park has over 40 campsites, multiple boat slips, and walking trails through hundreds of blackjack oaks. It is also the starting point for the Cross Timbers Hiking Trail, which covers over 13 miles of Lake Texoma shoreline from Juniper Point to Paw Paw Creek. For boaters, there are six easily accessible marinas throughout Sherwood Shores and the surrounding area. Cedar Mills Marina is one of the largest and is attached to the Cedar Mills Resort, an all-inclusive lakeside campground with a public airstrip. April to November is prime lake season, but flooding is more likely in early summer when the lake level rises.
With its lush greenery and peaceful surroundings, the Cross Timbers Hiking Trailhead is a perfect escape for those in Sherwood Shores.

Sherwood Shores homes come with extra land
Many of the established lake homes near the shores of the Red River were built between the 1960s and 1980s. Styles range from simple bungalows to striking A-frame cabins. A Sherwood Shores residence can sell for $150,000 to $300,000, but remodeled properties with extra sheds and outbuildings are between $350,000 and $400,000. Mobile homes are also an option for part-time residents and can sell for $100,000 to $250,000. Properties are built on narrow roads, and it is common for mobile homes and 2,000-square-foot cabins alike to have up to an acre of land with plenty of room to spread out. “When 2020 came, people realized they were stuck in their house. But if you were here and stuck in your house, you had a huge yard and plenty of parks,” says Carol Layman, a Sherman local and real estate agent with Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate. Sherwood Shores has a CAP Index Crime Score of 2 out of 10, below the national average of 4.

Boaters dock and eat at Pelicans Landing
Diners can drive in, dock their boat at the marina or even fly in at the Cedar Mills airstrip to have a meal at Pelicans Landing on Harbour View Road, which is attached to the Cedar Mills Marina and Resort. The Landing’s menu changes seasonally with different local seafood selections, but burgers, catfish and pizza are always available. Marshal’s Homestyle Cooking on U.S. Route 377 is another favorite place to sip a Bloody Mary or eat platters of chicken fried steak and corned beef hash before a day on the lake. There are no large shopping centers nearby, and Dollar General and Sherwood Grocery on U.S. Route 377 are the main places to pick up groceries and other goods within the neighborhood. For those interested in nightlife, Sherwood Shores is a prime location. While most forms of gambling are illegal in Texas, Oklahoma has over 100 active casinos. Megastar Casino in Willis is less than 3 miles away, while Texoma Casino and West Bay Casino are both 18 miles away in Kingston.
The laid-back vibe of Pelicans Landing, combined with fresh dishes and picturesque surroundings, makes it a favorite among Sherwood Shores locals.

Fishermen and equestrians attend Whitesboro High
Sherwood Shores is zoned to the small Whitesboro Independent School District, which has only four schools and around 1,700 students. “A lot of other families are moving here because the smaller ISDs, like Whitesboro and Pottsboro, are very parent-led, with smaller class sizes,” says Amy Gibbs, who is also known as the North Texas Guru for her work as a Realtor with United Real Estate DFW. J.W. Hayes Primary School, Whitesboro Intermediate School and Whitesboro Middle School all earn B-plus scores on Niche, and Whitesboro High School earns a B. The high school has a dozen sports teams and multiple hobby-focused clubs, including an equestrian team and a bass fishing club. The closest local college is Grayson College, the largest community college in Grayson County. The college is in Denison, 33 miles away.
