Neighborhood in Denver, Colorado
Denver County 80123, 80128
With its origins dating to the 1960s, Columbine Knolls, primarily north of Ken Caryl Avenue in the southern Denver suburb of Littleton, has many activities, whether planned by the Homeowners Association or that locals do on their own.
Whether it’s a community garage sale, a summer picnic or an Easter Egg Hunt, the Columbine Knolls Homeowners Association ensures that life in this neighborhood is fun and engaging. “It’s an active volunteer organization that organizes events like a clean-up day, but they also have rules that homeowners need to abide by, and they are enforced,” says Kathleen Hofstra, a Realtor with RE/MAX Professionals. She’s been selling houses in the area for over 30 years. One of the focal points of recreation is the Columbine Knolls Pool, the site of the summer picnic put on by the HOA. Toddlers have their section, and the deep end offers diving boards and a water slide. Another water option is the Normandy Pool & Tennis Club, which provides season passes for individuals and families or passes to use the tennis courts.
With plenty of parking spaces off Newland Street, Marker Park has tennis courts, a playground and picnic areas close to the lot. Beyond that are large athletic fields and a paved walking trail. Columbine Manor Park was recently renovated, bringing the playground closer to the parking lot. There’s plenty of green space and room for a soccer match. Horse-riding lessons and classes center around proper equestrian care at the Denver Equestrians Riding School. They also put on a Clydesdale-driven hayride through Littleton during the Christmas season to observe the lights. Creek Side Gardens is the neighborhood greenhouse and nursery offering tips and tricks to get flowers blooming.
“The homes in the northern section of Columbine Knolls are older and will have more space between properties,” Hofstra says. “The typical house here will have three to four bedrooms in the 2,000s for square feet.” Brick ranch-style and split-levels are the popular construction built between the 1960s and the ‘80s, priced between $600,000 and $800,000. Toward the southern end of the neighborhood is where you’ll find the four and five-bedroom homes with price tags close to or exceeding one million dollars.
Children living in Columbine Knolls can attend Normandy Elementary School with its B-plus overall grade on Niche. The student-to-teacher ratio is at 15-to-1, and the school has over 300 students. Students at Ken Caryl Middle School can take elective courses, including photography and world languages and cultures. The school gets a B-plus grade on Niche. Columbine High School’s overall Niche score is an A, with A-minus grades for the administration and the teachers. All schools are part of the Jefferson County School District R-1, known by the locals as Jeffco Public Schools.
One of the most popular places is a small pizza and sandwich shop in a strip mall. Roberts Italian Restaurant and Deli has subs, burgers and salads as well. They also cater special events and have held fundraising events to benefit the Colorado Fallen Heroes Foundation. Rocky’s Corner Café and Burritos is a breakfast and lunch place—which specializes in breakfast burritos. Dogs who happen to stop by will also get a treat. For ingredients for the kitchen, stop by King Soopers, located near the corner of Pierce Street and Coal Mine Avenue.
While living in Columbine Knolls, you’re about a half hour from downtown Denver. There is a Littleton light rail station run by the Regional Transportation District, a short distance to the east. For weekend fun in the Rocky Mountains, it’ll take a couple of hours to drive to the west to reach Breckenridge or Vail.
