Deer in the backyard

Ewing Woods-Evergreen is a small, walkable and densely wooded neighborhood off U.S. Highway 69 4 miles southeast of Des Moines. Despite the rural setting, Ewing Woods-Evergreen offers convenient access to all the amenities of Iowa's largest city. Wide-open suburban streets with maple tree saplings and oaks lining the medians cast shadows over the well-maintained sidewalks and manicured front lawns. "It's a very peaceful neighborhood," says Realtor Donna Levering with Keller Williams, who has sold several homes in this community. "Just outside your door, you might see deer, owls, lots of wildlife."

Easter Lake Park is within walking distance, offering access to three playgrounds, five picnic shelters and 6.5 miles of hiking trails. Ewing Woods-Evergreen community is served by the Des Moines Independent Community School District and the Carlyle Community School District, both of which offer open enrollment but do not provide transportation to students coming from outside of the district. Jackson Elementary and Weeks Middle School are walkable from many neighborhood homes and earn a C and C-minus from Niche, respectively. East High School has a C. The school has a rich history, having continuously operated since 1861 and in the same building since 1911 when the student marched alongside a caravan of trucks and horse-drawn wagons transporting the furniture. Ever since, the school has commemorated the event with Class Day, an annual gathering of alumni and current students, which includes a banquet and awarding of scholarships.
