Greenwood Park landscapes and the Des Moines Art Center

Established in 1894 with 80 acres of green space, a wonderful playground, “sprayground,” tennis and pickleball court, and open-air and enclosed shelters to explore, Greenwood Park is an essential part of the neighborhood. “Our residents value health, sustainability and community, and Greenwood Park contributes to those pillars,” says Jenny Richmond, Assistant Director of the City of Des Moines Parks and Recreation department. “We also have a really stellar national caliber volunteer coordination team.” Locals can sign up to help remove invasive species, pick up litter and help keep the park a beautiful destination for residents and visitors. “The Sylvan Amphitheater in the park is a beloved outdoor wedding space,” Richmond says. “In 1995, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.” Once a spot where locals could gather and perform, the naturally formed outdoor amphitheater sits against the backdrop of the Clare and Miles Mills Rose Garden. The roses bloom best in June and September, happily in time for peak wedding season. Just nearby is the Des Moines Art Center, which offers free admission and has an on-site café. “The relationship Greenwood Park has with the Des Moines Art Center is fantastic and collaborative,” Richmond says. “The center is an amazing resource for the community.” The art center showcases contemporary art and offers classes for adults and children with reduced tuition fees for members.

Bustling block parties within Ingersoll Park

Every year on the Saturday of Labor Day weekend, residents gather at one of two small green spaces between neighborhood streets. The Ingersoll Park Holiday Walk is a tour around town to view the many Christmas light displays and decorations that residents put up during December. Ingersoll Park also hosts the Mile 8 Water Station for the IMT Des Moines Marathon every October, so families and their children can volunteer to help runners stay hydrated and motivated. In Spring, Ingersoll residents try to leave their lawns unmowed during Now Mow May to help the honeybees live and pollinate wildflowers.

We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
