Close to downtown but not too close
Berg-Lahser is a small Detroit neighborhood without much excitement, but residents say it’s a good place for families. “It’s quiet, peaceful,” says Pamela Samuel, a 35-year resident of Berg-Lahser, former president of the Berg-Lahser Community Association and licensed Realtor with Prime Financial Plus Realty. “And I just printed 1,400 newsletters for the community association. That’s how engaged the community is.” While the neighborhood is light on bars and significant events, it has some great amenities for families looking to live in Detroit without being in the thick of city action.
Berg-Lahser homes and community
The low-slung rooflines of ranch-style homes are widespread throughout Berg-Lahser, but the neighborhood also holds bungalow and Colonial-style homes. Though these homes might need some repairs, the neighborhood faces fewer challenges than other areas of Detroit. To help maintain neighborhood homes, the Berg-Lahser Community Association keeps residents informed of programs like federal loans for disaster relief, which help homeowners and renters rebuild after being impacted by natural disasters. These and other programs, Samuel says, do everything from providing zero-interest repair grants to helping residents pay their taxes. With the neighborhood being so well-maintained, potential homebuyers can find homes needing little to no repairs for less than $100,000. Prices range from $63,000 to $263,000, and the median selling price is $145,135, up 32% from the previous year.
Groceries at Sam’s Club, local restaurants for dining out
For families looking to cook or dine out, there are a couple of options in Berg-Lahser. “Omega Coney Island is the go-to place for a bite to eat,” Samuel says. “And Sam’s Club is right across the street. That’s where everyone goes for their groceries.” Detroit seafood market Manhattan Fish and Chicken gives residents a local option for fresh seafood and ready-made meals. For retail shopping options, Berg-Lahser residents will have to head to nearby shopping stops like Redford Oaks Shopping Center in Five Points or Seven and Evergreen Plaza in Evergreen Lahser 7/8. For families with kids looking for something to do on a Saturday, The Northland Roller Rink has been a community staple for over 70 years.
Locally organized events
Berg-Lahser is close enough to downtown Detroit for residents to enjoy significant events like the recent NFL draft pick or the North American International Detroit Auto Show. Still, Samuel says the Berg-Lahser Community Association organizes smaller events throughout the year. “We usually have a Christmas giveaway where we give families food baskets for Christmas,” she says. “We have meetings at First Baptist World Changers, and they let us hold community events there.” Some events held at the church include a three-week entrepreneurship and money management course and a monthly women’s club, Amazing Women of Excellence.
Public charter options and a media-focused high school
With two public charter schools in the neighborhood, Berg-Lahser families have their choice of schools. Serving kindergarten through 8th grade and earning a C on Niche, Madison-Carver Academy offers a Junior Achievement program, after-school sports and a Legacy Club for middle school students. Weston Academy also serves kindergarten through 8th grade but earns a D-minus. High school students can earn college credits through the Dual Enrollment program at Communication and Media Arts High School, which earns a C.
Upcoming greenways to connect families to more park options
The two parks in Berg-Lahser are grass multi-use fields with no amenities, but upcoming changes will connect Berg-Lahser families to other Detroit parks and neighborhoods offering a little more. The city is currently planning and constructing the Joe Louis Greenway—a network of trails and sidewalks to connect parks and communities throughout the city—and plans show the greenway will connect to a stretch of sidewalks in the north end of Berg-Lahser. Another planned Greenway, the Rouge River Greenway, will end at Berg-Lahser’s Frisbee-Pembroke Park, which sits along the banks of the Rouge River in Berg-Lahser.
Interstate access is a short drive away
The Detroit Department of Transportation operates bus stops along the neighborhood’s major roads like Eight Mile Road, West Seven Mile Road and Lahser Road. As the neighborhood’s largest road, Eight Mile Road can eventually connect drivers to Interstates 75 and 94 after a short drive. Just west of the neighborhood, Telegraph Road connects to Interstate 96, south of Berg-Lahser. Residents who like to walk will be happy knowing Berg-Lahser’s roads have plenty of sidewalks, and the city’s upcoming greenways connect those to neighborhoods and parks across the city.
