Campau-Banglatown blends old and new Detroit traditions

Named for one of Detroit’s earlier settlers and for some of the city’s most recent arrivals, the Campau-Banglatown neighborhood of Detroit tells the story of a growing city both in name and through its diverse atmosphere. Hamtramck’s rich Bengali cultural scene spills over into Detroit in this cultural enclave. Bangladeshi restaurants and shops invite other members of Campau-Banglatown’s multicultural community to explore South Asian culture, while properties from the early 1900s offer competitive prices and vintage aesthetics.

Local restaurants and shops express Bengali culture

As its name suggests, Campau-Banglatown blends old and new Detroit traditions. Coney Star Halal Kitchen, inspired by Metro Detroit’s iconic Coney Island diners, serves up the classic “Coney Island hot dog” while also including South Asian staples like chicken tikka on the menu. Deshi Bhoj goes all-in on trying to recreate the atmosphere of a Bengali restaurant, from its décor to its varieties of biryani. The Jalalabad Market and Bishr Poultry & Food Center are just two of the Banglatown small businesses selling imported Bangladeshi products and halal foods. A local Family Dollar adds to this variety of grocery options. For farm-fresh produce like apples, tomatoes and peppers, Sylhet Farm operates a farmers’ market just two blocks from Masjid al-Falah, the local mosque and community center.

Vintage homes tend to feature lush gardens

Though Banglatown only took form in the 1990s, this section of Detroit was developed from the 1900s to 1920s as the Motor City’s automaking industry began to boom. Bungalows, split-levels and ranch-style residences line Campau-Banglatown’s streets, which are densely packed with early-20th-century construction. Despite this heavily urbanized atmosphere, Banglatown is known for its lush gardens, with residents choosing to cultivate Bengali herbs like red amaranth in their back yards and curbside flowers out front. Homes tend to sell for between $73,000 and $186,000, with well-maintained properties garnering higher sale prices.

Banglatown is close to a massive athletic park and the Hamtramck Disneyland

Banglatown sits just across Conant from Jayne-Lasky Park, a 65-acre green space full of recreational opportunities. Several baseball fields, basketball courts, playgrounds and a splash pad are open to the public, while the park also features Detroit’s only public minigolf course. Just a block south of Banglatown, a small art installation attempts to bring Disney magic to the heart of Metro Detroit. Locally called “Hamtramck Disneyland,” this yard of folk art was designed by a retired General Motors employee who, on leaving the auto industry, decided to make a small village of painted woodworks for the community to enjoy. Though the original artist Dmytro Szylak passed away in 2015, the city of Hamtramck and a local art collective keep this unique art experience alive for locals and international visitors to enjoy.

Student innovation is brought out at Detroit schools

Banglatown is home to Davison Elementary-Middle School, where students can start their public education; Niche rates the school a C. Learners go on to attend Pershing High School, rated C-minus. Although Pershing has historically grappled with the threat of closure, it continues to host a variety of extracurriculars from STEM Club to robotics, encouraging student innovation.

Easy access to factory jobs and healthcare

Automaking has long been the lifeblood of Detroit and Hamtramck’s economies, and Banglatown offers easy access to Hamtramck’s General Motors “Factory Zero.” The 52 bus connects the neighborhood to the factory within a 15-minute journey, while driving would take approximately 10 minutes. The nearest hospital, the Highland Park Health Center, is just 5 minutes down State Route 8, offering both employment opportunities and healthcare conveniences.
