Detroit's oldest neighborhood: artistic, thriving and pedestrian-friendly

Located just west of downtown Detroit, Corktown has a charismatic, artistic undercurrent, creating an identity all its own. Colorful and ornate houses show off their personalities in Detroit’s oldest neighborhood, established in 1834. “Corktown is expanding both in terms of single-family homes and businesses. The draw is the entertainment and proximity to downtown,” says Miranda Morrow, licensed real estate broker at National Realty Centers with over 15 years of experience. Michigan Central Station, a former transportation hub, has recently reopened as a mixed-use space dedicated to mobility solutions, attracting significant investment to the area. Corktown is very walkable with bike lanes and good public transit.

Bobcat Bonnie’s is a favorite neighborhood brunch spot with a hip and laid-back environment. Locals can stock up on local food at Eastern Market, a district 3 miles away that hosts three street markets per week. All Things Marketplace is a one-stop shop for local art and hand-crafted items. For the music admirer, Hello Records showcases an ever-changing selection of vinyl. John K. King Used & Rare Books offers over one million books, making it the largest shop of its kind in the state. Turn-of-the-century Detroit homes

The buildings of Corktown range from homes over 100 years old to sleek, contemporary residences. Though it’s a densely populated area, fences retain some privacy for homeowners. Sidewalks make this a pedestrian-friendly part of Detroit. Plus, “it’s not a highly polluted area; the pollution here is the norm for any city,” Morrow says. “It’s very vibrant, but not noisy. It’s calm enough to still raise a family.” Turn-of-the-century homes have old, charming features like fireplaces as well as modern necessities like dishwashers. Prices range from $275,000 for a one-bedroom Colonial Revival to $600,000 for a four-bedroom Victorian with a grand staircase. Apartments and lots are also available at a wide range of price points.

The closest hospital is DMC Detroit Receiving Hospital, less than 4 miles away. There are train tracks in the western portion of the community. Residents may experience overhead air traffic from Windsor International Airport in Ontario, Canada, just over the Detroit River.
