Revitalizing community celebrating its strengths
Though mostly undeveloped until 1913, Detroit’s East English Village neighborhood experienced significant growth in the mid-twentieth century thanks to the city’s burgeoning automotive industry. Today, the neighborhood’s streets are lined with brick homes styled in mid-century fashion, and residents stay connected through community holiday parties, landscaping contests and garden tours. In addition to its community vibe, East English Village continues to grow, attracting affordable housing projects like “The Ribbon” on East Warren Avenue. “The Ribbon building has retail on the first floor and apartments on floors two and three,” says Ron Otto, Realtor with Real Broker, LLC. “And two more projects like that are going up within five blocks.”
East English Village is known for its array of home styles, shapes, and sizes.
East English Village are generally well maintained and increasing in value.

Modest lawns and traditional brick houses
The neighborhood’s tree-lined streets and mix of architecture is part of East English Village’s charm, says Jay Williams, co-owner of Next Chapter Books. “There wasn’t this cookie-cutter setting,” Williams says. “There’s a variety here we fell in love with.” Built primarily between the 1930s and 1950s, East English Village homes exude the unique charm of Tudor, Cape Cod and colonial revival styles popular at that time. Homes commonly come with brick facades and sit on grassy lawns little wider than the houses themselves. Prices can dip as low as $94,000 and reach as high as $295,000. The median home price in 2024 was $178,500, up 2% from the previous year.
Residents of East English enjoy dense tree canopies that come out during the summer monthts.

A thriving bookstore, locally made products and neighborhood bars
The community is attracting local restaurateurs, and Williams says the general hope is that a growing dining scene will also bring in locally owned shops. “We started as a popup at the Alger Theater in November of 2022, and we got a sense the community was happy to have a bookstore,” Williams says. “The community has responded very well to being able to shop locally in their community.” In August of 2023, Next Chapter Books opened its doors on East Warren Avenue, bringing a neighborhood bookstore to the area. To support local artists, residents can pick up paintings and other works at The Secret Garden Gallery Detroit, which also offers art classes and interactive murals.
Grocery options include Royal Fresh Market and the East Warren Farmers Market, the latter of which is sponsored by the E. Warren Development Corp, which focuses on attracting new businesses to the area. The Farmers Market is open each Thursday from June to September and sells locally made goods like organic body products and handcrafted jewelry alongside fresh, Michigan-grown produce. Popular restaurants in the area include Good Vibes Lounge, known for its Lobster Burger and Hennessey Wings, and the Detroit Pepper Company, home of the original Detroit Stuffed Pepper.
Join the legendary Cadieux Cafe Feather Bowling League which hosts weekly get togethers.
Next Chapter Books often hosts poetry readings, concerts, and author-meets.

Sledding hills and dog runs
While East English Village does not have parks, plenty of green spaces surround it. Less than a mile east, Balduck Park has one of Detroit’s most popular sledding hills, which earned a mention in the Elmore Leonard novel “Pagan Babies." With more than 56 acres of green space, the park is also home to wooded trails, playgrounds and a dog park. Families can let the kids play at nearby Messmer Playground on Bluehill Street or Morningside Playground on 3 Mile Drive.
Our four-legged friends love the paths, tree covered grass and fields at Balduck Park.

Recycled materials build a sustainable community
Local events include student workshops and creative programs lasting six, eight or 12 weeks at the Arts & Scraps Detroit Community Store. The East English Village neighborhood association also hosts a popular holiday party each December, a garden club and an annual garage sale.
Short commutes on major roadways
With Interstate 94 partially bordering the neighborhood, East English Village provides drivers quick access to metro Detroit and its major thoroughfares. Larger streets like Chandler Park Drive and East Warren Avenue are lined with bus stops, giving residents access to Detroit’s public transit system. Sidewalks line most streets, and walkers can access local shops and restaurants easily. Henry Ford St. John Hospital is only 2 miles east, providing residents with fast access to 24-hour emergency medical care. For national and international flights, Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport is roughly 27 miles southwest.

The community of Kensington Avenue has a very low crime rate, the safety is very important to everyone in my neighborhood that's why we show one another respect when it comes to their house, yard, and members. Every day of the week one police car patrols our neighborhood to look for any danger like fires, human crime, and drug solicitation, but they rarely have to get engaged with any of these issue.

The atmosphere of this neighborhood has a sense of peace the peace where no one bother one another every spoke with respect once they seen and greeted one another. If I had a chance to live in this neighborhood again I will because this neighborhood had a sense of peace, meaning I can walk down a street and no one would bother me, and the house and neatest with their design made me even more happy because you rarely see nice houses that you can stare at for a long period of time.
