A little neighborhood with a lot to offer
Elmwood Park is a small but diverse community just east of downtown Detroit. While it's often lumped with its neighbor to the west, Lafayette Park, this neighborhood stands out as a less expensive alternative.
“When people are priced out of Lafayette Park, they move across the street to something a little more affordable but offers the same amenities,” says Jim Hall, a realtor with Simon & Associates Real Estate who has lived in Elmwood Park for over 40 years.
While there aren’t as many high-rises as Lafayette Park, Elmwood Park features more co-ops, condos and townhouses housing people from all walks of life. It also offers a prime location and is home to some of the highest-regarded public schools in the city. “It’s a very stable community with access to nearly every amenity you can imagine,” says Hall. “When it was developed, the city made a commitment to include a mixture of homes for middle-income folks. It’s always been a solid, middle-class neighborhood, and it's maintained that with time.”
Elmwood Park is located a short bike ride away from downtown Detroit and the Detroit River.
Tight knit multi family condominium communities make up most of Elmwood Park.

Elmwood Park’s convenient location
Hall says one of the primary draws to Elmwood Park is its location. “The access to downtown, to everything that makes a city a city, is what attracts people,” he says. “I mean, I can see everything. I can even see the fireworks show from my deck.”
The Financial District, the Detroit Medical Center (DMC) and Wayne State University are all within a 3-mile radius of this neighborhood. It’s also just north of the Aretha Franklin Amphitheatre and blocks from Greektown, putting ample entertainment a short drive away. And while Elmwood Park is a walkable and bikeable community, the Chrysler Freeway and Fisher Freeway are easily accessible. Drivers can also take main streets like Jefferson or Gratiot to get into downtown Detroit in 10 minutes. The Chene, Van Dyke-Lafayette, Gratiot, and Cadillac-Harper bus routes also run through this area.

Shopping and dining in every direction
There’s shopping and dining all around Elmwood Park. While the Family Fair grocery store sits on Chene and Lafayette, the Meijer on Jefferson and Rivard is also a community go-to. Chene Square shopping mall sits at the intersection of Jefferson and Chene and features Gordon Food Service Store, Dollar Tree and several restaurants like Bucharest Grill. And while there are seemingly endless restaurants lining Jefferson, Mr. Fish on East Vernor is a hot spot for lunch and dinner.

It’s temporarily closed for construction but is slated to reopen by December 2024.
