Every blossoming community experiences its own highs and lows, and Evergreen-Outer Drive is no different. In a place that was built for industry executives, rebranding and rebuilding are now the focus and the surrounding communities are committed to getting it back on the right track.

“There’s a value system that we appreciate here, and that’s what we like to take precedence. The houses in this area were originally built for major automotive executives, and we know that we can restore the reputation that they had then,” says Harrison Duke, Detroit native and resident historian living in the Grandmont neighborhood. “We want everyone in these communities to understand that when you do well, you live well. We all talk about it all the time, but I wish the negativity would just stop.”

Quaint and cozy streets wrap around the Evergreen-Outer Drive neighborhood. Intimate homes sit on long, narrow lots that make for deep backyards that are very usable to entertain family and friends. Brick traditional-style homes offer well-maintained lawns dotted with growing trees and hedges. Cozy bungalows are the most prevalent in the area, inspired by various design styles with features like front porches and stoops, back patios, bay windows and Cape Cod dormers. Prices in Evergreen-Outer Drive are significantly lower than in surrounding areas, with two-bedroom homes priced under $100,000 and three- and four-bedroom homes maxing out at $175,000.

As part of the Detroit Public Schools Community School District, the options are wide open when it comes to mapping out their academic journey. With an overall Niche grade of B-minus, Bates Academy takes students straight through grade eight, and the B-plus-rated Cass Technical High School just introduced a new program that guides entrepreneurial mother-daughter duos on getting their business ideas up and running.

Milan Playfield has all the makings of a fulfilling outdoor experience, featuring everything from a football field to horseshoe courts, while children entertain themselves on the playgrounds and adults get gatherings together at the picnic shelters or get their steps in on the walking paths. “In the last 10 years, the city has really put forth an effort to provide necessary recreational outlets that benefit residents,” says Duke. Since Milan Playfield has been selected as a location to be revamped, community meetings are now being scheduled to identify exactly what residents want and how that can be fulfilled. The expansion of Marx Playground is also being discussed. The green space currently features a playground and picnic areas.

For groceries and everyday essentials, Save-A-Lot conveniently sits right on Eight Mile Road, and North Rosedale Park’s Royal Fresh Market is a local favorite among the surrounding communities. Skip the dishes at Island Spice Caribbean, featuring a menu full of West dishes like brown stew chicken and ackee and saltfish, or take advantage of the specials inspired by the NYC amusement park at Grandy’s Coney Island.

Residents can visit the nearby Redford Branch Detroit Public Library in their downtime. A well-visited location among all the neighborhoods in the area, Redford offers insightful and educational interactive areas for the kids and quiet places to rest and relax for adults. The library also regularly hosts events for the several communities that utilize the space, including academic tutoring, music lessons and monthly knitting book clubs.
