The legacy of jazz legend Elle Fitzgerald is honored in Fitzgerald at a park on Prairie Street, a small part of a much larger urban renewal movement in the neighborhood. Just 10 miles from downtown Detroit, Fitzgerald is characterized by its generational neighbors who advocate for the longevity of their community through the creation of neighborhood gardens. Fitzgerald has seen many revitalization projects, such as The Fitzgerald Revitalization Project, a $4-million initiative to restore its blighted homes and vacant lots. "Fitzgerald is one of those up-and-coming neighborhoods," says LaShawn Peterson with Exp Realty. "A drive-through in the neighborhood, you'll see that residents helped turn vacant lots into wildflower fields, and it is beautiful."
In the garden at Huntington Community Park
Kentucky Street has received well-deserved care, seeing its blighted buildings spring into flowers at the brand-new Huntington Community Park. Its community-oriented essence is all thanks to the Marygrove Community Association, formed of generational neighbors who have long advocated the restoration of this district. Indiana Street stays vibrant, home to a native plant garden, where community gatherings and markets are held. "There is just so much culture here. There are nice spaces where you can sit on benches and admire flowers or feed the birds," Peterson says. The Marygrove Community Association Makers and Farmers Market is a monthly event on Thursdays held at the garden. On Puritan Avenue, Superbad Fitness was founded by Tony Harrison, who was once named Super Welterweight Boxing Champion of the World. The center is a space for youth to receive mentorship and boxing training. The San Juan Block Club and the Pilgrim Village Association are active clubs organizing clean-ups.
Birds singing in the sycamore trees at Fitzgerald Park
The roads near Ella Fitzgerald Park are painted blue to indicate a slow zone, and the graphics are an interpretation of Fitzgerald's song, "Dream a Little Dream of Me." The 6-foot stainless steel slide reflects the musical legacy of the jazz singer, resembling piano keys and the seven notes of the musical scale. It is the site of many neighborhood events and gatherings, such as NOIR Cinema, a one-day film festival highlighting Black filmmakers. An annual Trunk & Treat event and a back-to-school fair offer food, vaccinations and free school supplies. Lollo Park also underwent revitalization and features a small playscape, a looped walking trail and picnic table. Additional recreation is found at Adams Butzel Complex for sports and Palmer Park, which has a splash pad around 3 miles away.

Love a hand me down brew at Detroit Sip
Locals can head to Savon Foods Supermarket on Livernois and Liberty Food Center on West McNichols Road. Down this street, T-Mo's BBQ Pit is a family-owned spot run by a husband-and-wife duo known for their hickory smoked menu coated in their secret signature rub. Lou's Deli is an old-school sandwich spot, and Detroit Sip is a cafe with their signature McNichols Morning cup of coffee. Long-standing shops like Just Cuttin' Up Barbershop are on Puritan Ave and have seen generations grow. The neighborhood is also less than three miles from the historic Livernois Avenue of Fashion, a mecca of businesses known for their Black cultural heritage.
Up in the morning and out to school at DPS
Students in the community may be a part of the Detroit Public Schools Community District, with about 106 schools throughout the city. Students in Fitzgerald may attend Mary McLeod Bethune Elementary-Middle School on Puritan Avenue, serving pre-school through eighth grade and has a vocal music program and a STEM Club. They may advance to Mumford High School or The School at Marygrove, which services kindergarten through twelfth grades. The school is split into an elementary and high school on West McNichols Road and was once Mary Grove College, a private Roman Catholic graduate college that has since closed in 2019. According to Niche, all the following schools earn a grade of C-minus or above. "Fitzgerald is also close to the University of Detroit Mercy and walking distance from classes," Peterson says.
