Forest Park-Eastern Market is a conveniently located community brimming with shopping, dining and entertainment. Home to the Eastern Market, residents of this neighborhood have immediate access to some of the freshest groceries in the city from June to September. It’s also just east of Midtown, putting the Detroit Medical Center (DMC), Wayne State University and other institutions a bike ride away. Living near Eastern Market
The main perk of living in Forest Park-Eastern Market is the proximity to the namesake market. With over 43 acres and more than 180 years of service, Eastern Market is one of the largest and oldest outdoor farmers markets in the country.
“Eastern Market is an amazing place to go on Saturdays to get fresh produce directly from farmers,” says Jan Dijkers, president and managing broker at Berkshire Hathaway Home Service The Loft Warehouse, who works in the neighborhood.
The market is open on Saturdays, Sundays and Tuesdays and brings farmers to the city to sell their products directly to consumers. There, locals buy fresh, in-season produce, flowers, meat and more. The Sunday Market features local art, jewelry and music. The Tuesday Market is scaled down regarding vendors but includes activities such as free Zumba and yoga classes.
The market area is also a hub for Detroit Lions fans on gamedays. Fans can purchase a tailgating spot in one of the market’s parking lots and prepare to cheer on the team with friends and family before heading to Ford Field.

Dijkers says the neighborhood is great for foodies and has plenty of restaurant options. Whether it’s corned beef sandwiches, tacos, Italian or burgers, there’s something for almost every craving. Vivio’s is one of the most popular restaurants in the neighborhood and has been around since 1967. Locals enjoy the restaurant’s classic bar and grill feel, with stained glass over the bar and red vinyl booths. With a menu that includes Reubens, pastrami burgers and mussels, there is something for everyone at this local watering hole.
For craft beverages, they stop in Detroit City Distillery, which produces small-batch whiskey, gin and vodka. Local breweries Lagerhaus No. 5 and Eastern Market Brewing serve innovative ales and lagers in renovated industrial spaces. In addition to the market, residents shop for groceries at the Whole Foods on Mack.
