Suburban Neighborhood in Detroit, Michigan
Wayne County 48205, 48213
Gratiot-Findlay, a neighborhood on Detroit’s Eastside, is immersed in culture and resilience. This Wayne County community is 8 miles from Downtown Detroit and adjacent to the airport, with easy access to the Edsel Ford Expressway. “It is off the Gratiot corridor where residents who rely on public transportation can easily commute the city,” says Realtor Erika Baker with Keller Williams Realty –Great Lakes.
Gratiot-Findlay is characterized by its resilient community members. The Shed at Martz Park is a neighborhood-based community organization working together to aid the youth and residents. You’ll find hand-made art, clothing and historical books here. It also acts as a community gathering space hosting poetry open mics, movie showings and bonfires. O’Brien Park is a small pocket park with a playground, a walking trail and a basketball court, an ideal place to spend the afternoon. Martz Playground also has a playscape, walking circle and a large soccer field to enjoy a fun game in your free time. “Neighboring communities are up and coming, and this is trickling into the Connor neighborhood,” Baker says.
Eden Gardens’ Community Garden is a partnership between the Eden Gardens Community Association and the Isaac Agree Downtown Synagogue. The learning garden began as an initiative to address residents’ concerns, such as the lack of healthy food options and the revitalization of vacant lots in the neighborhood. Residents can come to the garden to learn how to grow and harvest their produce and sell it to local farmer’s markets. New additions to the park include a fruit orchard with 16 different trees. The season begins in April and runs through November on Thursday-Sunday for community members looking to get acquainted with their neighbors.
In Gratiot-Findlay, homes are situated on long rectangular lots, shrouded by trees with sidewalks connecting homes. Most homes in Conner are fixer-uppers; “Detroit is pouring financial funding into the neighborhood and putting restrictions on landlords, making the community a safer and more accessible place for residents,” says Baker. Primary home styles include 1950s brick ranches, Tudors with steeply pitched roofs and backyard chefs, and colonials with stately chimneys. Prices range from $40,000 for homes that need a little TLC to $90,000.
Edward “Duke” Ellington Conservatory of Music and Art provides a combined curriculum emphasizing Performing and Fine arts and academic development and is graded with a C-minus, according to Niche. Other schools include Charles L. Spain Elementary-Middle School and Cass Technical High School, awarded a B-minus, according to Niche. It is a magnet school providing a rigorous college prep-based curriculum.
Gratiot-Findlay is down the street to The Harpos Concert Theater, a historic venue built in 1939 reflecting Art-Moderne architectural influences. Originally a movie theater, then a disco club in the 70s —it is now known for its heavy metal and rock shows. Rock legends like Iron Maiden and Slipknot have performed alongside hardcore hip-hop acts like Snoop Dog and Lil’ Kim. Mazen Foods is in the neighborhood for grocery store runs. Down Gratiot Avenue, you’ll find franchises such as Wendy’s and Little Caesar’s. Detroit Breakfast serves classic diner staples if you’re looking for a local spot and are a seafood lover. Olympia Coney Island is an old-school joint where coney-island-style food is served up counter side. Because of its rich culture and dedicated neighbors, Gratiot-Findlay is the place for those seeking community.
