Neighborhood in Detroit, Michigan
Wayne County 48205
Located at the heart of Detroit’s densely populated Upper East Side and adjacent to Coleman A. Young International Airport, LaSalle College Park may appear to the naked eye to blend in with its heavily urbanized surroundings. However, this ten-block-wide neighborhood stands out among its peers with its abundance of gorgeous, brick-built Tudor homes and its comparatively low housing prices. If you desire to live in a stately home for nearly half the cost of the average house in Detroit, consider this community.
LaSalle College Park is located within a historic part of Detroit; it is next to the Coleman A. Young International Airport, which served as Detroit’s primary airport until 1947, and within a few blocks of the commercial hub at the corner of Seven Mile Road and Gratiot Avenue. The neighborhood derives its name from Robert de La Salle, the French explorer whose activities in the Great Lakes during the 1680s eventually led to the establishment of the French fort that became the city of Detroit. The French influence on Detroit’s history can be seen in the street names of LaSalle College Park, such as Racine (meaning “root”) and Strasburg (a city in eastern France) streets.
This 17th-century influence on the neighborhood far extends the names of a few streets, however. LaSalle College Park is perhaps best known for its brick-built Tudor homes, many of which were built from the 1930s to the 1950s. These homes line quiet residential streets flanked by sidewalks and trees, yet they have been significantly undervalued by the real estate market due to their distance from downtown Detroit’s pricier housing. Realtor Jonathan Golden of House of Realty says, “It’s an excellent investment opportunity in a thriving neighborhood.” Homes in LaSalle College Park sell for between $50,000 and $80,000; as Detroit has an average home value of $80,000, homebuyers can pay as little as half that amount for a historic brick home sure to provide great warmth during cold Midwestern winters. From both the perspective of local sellers and aspiring buyers, this neighborhood holds great potential for reappreciation and rejuvenation. Golden adds, “Whether you’re a seasoned investor or a newcomer to real estate, these properties promise strong rental income potential and long-term value.”
LaSalle College Park may be a primarily residential neighborhood, but retail and restaurant conveniences are always just around the corner. If you’re in need of a quick grocery trip, the Seven Star Food Center sells all the essentials, while the nearest Mike’s Fresh Market supermarket is only 2 miles away. Foodies also have a favorite local spot to enjoy; Zorba’s Coney Island is as well-known for its round-the-clock reliability as it is for the quality of its food. This local eatery is open for business 24/7, and Zorba’s is renowned for its fresh-made sliders, nachos, sandwiches, and other comfort food favorites.
Kids can play in the local O’Brien Playground, a small green space with a playground and basketball court for outdoor recreation. Students may attend the C-minus-rated Holmes Academy of Blended Learning and Osborn High School, the latter of which offers a smaller student-teacher ratio and B-rated teachers.
Downtown-bound commuters live within just 7 miles of Detroit’s economic hub, with Gratiot Avenue providing residents with an easy drive.
If you’re looking for a picturesque home for nearly half the average market price, LaSalle College Park is full of opportunities.
