Culture, convenience and growth
LaSalle Gardens is in the heart of Detroit, both in location and feel. With the West Grand Boulevard to the south, Rosa Parks to the east and Linwood to the west, this community is centrally located. It’s also home to Aretha Franklin’s childhood house, borders Henry Ford Hospital, and features several exhibits of Detroit’s history in the automobile and music scene—all paired with a promising housing market. “There’s a lot of renovations going on,” says Realtor Emilio Basa of Quick Property Solutions. “Homes are being rehabbed with new rooves and windows, and the community of people that are coming together and building the streets out are here. It’s very exciting.”

Art and history in every direction
LaSalle Gardens is full of Detroit culture. Aretha Franklin’s childhood home is still located at the corner of LaSalle Boulevard and Lothrop Street. While it is a private residence, it’s still a pilgrimage stop for music lovers. New Bethel Baptist Church, where The Queen of Soul spent Sunday mornings singing in the choir, still stands on the corner of Linwood and Euclid. Once the center of Detroit's civil rights movement, New Bethel is still involved in the community through charity and education initiatives. Kicks 4 Kids, for instance, is an annual event where the church provides kids with new shoes around the Christmas season.
Along with historic landmarks, the neighborhood has a vibrant art scene. Community murals express the vibrancy of LaSalle Gardens’ culture and the creativity of its residents. LaSalle Gardens’ Motor City Car Club showcases years of Detroit history in-car displays that reflect Motor City’s roots. Sitting on Grand Boulevard, Irwin House is a global art gallery that provides local and visiting artists with exhibition opportunities. The Motown Museum is also just minutes from the neighborhood’s center.

A selection of single-family and multi-family homes
Housing in LaSalle Gardens ranges from duplexes and more modest homes to larger, gated estates. Most streets are lined with Dutch Colonial, Four-Square and bungalow architecture alongside empty lots. These homes sell between $25,000 and $150,000 depending on the size, level of renovations done and year built. Most do not feature garages, so on-street parking is common.
On the other hand, LaSalle Park is surrounded by stately homes from the early 1900s. Colonial Revival, English Revival, and American Four Squares are the most common architectural styles. Many homes include driveways leading to backyard garages. The neighborhood’s longstanding history shows through the mature trees which create a canopy of greenery. The paved sidewalks below allow for easy morning strolls. The houses around the park typically sell between $200,000 and $400,000. Growth in this community stems mostly from the welcoming range of home prices. “New buyers are setting the market price; refurbished homes can be talked down to $250,000,” says Basa.
