If you’re looking for a home in a walkable, suburban community in western Detroit, you might consider Miller Grove. Here, you’ll find leafy, residential streets full of mature trees that bloom spectacularly in the springtime. “You’ve got a large percentage of homeowners here and it definitely shows,” says Realtor Kenneth Evans of Reach Realty Group, a western Detroit resident who has worked in the area for more than a decade.

Located in the northwest corner of the city, the district is laid out on a traditional street grid with rows of homes that date back to the early and mid-20th century. Colonial Revival styles, cozy cottages and Tudor Revival style homes with steep-pitched rooftops and asymmetrical designs can all be found here. You’ll also see some Craftsman homes with their hallmark wide porches and thick columns. Large- and mid-sized lots are common here, so you’ll have plenty of room for landscaping, gardening or a backyard barbecue. Prices typically range from around $75,000 to $175,000, although some homes in need of major improvements have sold for $30,000 or less. “It’s great because you’re near the historic district of Grandmont, but you’re getting a lower price,” Evans says.

Public parks and green spaces are plentiful in this area. Residents are walking distance from James T. Hope Playfield Park, a community park with walking trails, a playground and plenty of room for picnicking. Right next door to the park is Crowell Recreation Center, a local community space where you can take advantage of indoor fitness equipment, shoot hoops at an indoor gym or participate in social activities. Just a few blocks away, there’s also Midland-Bentler Playground, a smaller park with play structures, grassy fields and shady trees. Avid golfers can take advantage of nearby Rouge Park Golf Course, a public, 18-hole course and driving range that's just a few miles south of Miller Grove.

Students can attend Emerson Elementary-Middle School and Ford High School, both of which hold C-minus ratings from Niche, an online school review site. Students who want a specialty education might prefer to attend the Charles Wright Academy of Arts and Science, a highly-sought-after local school serving kindergarten through eighth grade. If you’re looking for a place to read or study, the neighborhood is also close to the Redford branch of the Detroit Public Library.

You’ll find dining and grocery options on nearby Grand River Avenue. Make sure you try Detroit Vegan Soul, a popular spot that offers vegan versions of soul food staples including a tofu catfish sandwich and southern fried oyster mushrooms. If you’re looking for something quick, you can stop by Pressed Juice Bar for a healthy elixir, while those in the mood for something sweet might try Elias Donuts. The neighborhood is also right near The Redford Theatre, a vintage movie house that shows Hollywood classics and independent films all year-round. For groceries, there’s a Meijer supermarket and a Family Dollar where you can pick up the necessities. Big box stores and major grocery chains can be found within about 10 miles, including Target, Walmart, Sam’s Club, Costco and Trader Joe’s.

The neighborhood’s proximity to major roadways and access to local bus stops makes it easy to get around. Hop on Interstate 96 and it’s about 20 minutes to downtown Detroit. With eclectic architecture, natural scenery and nearby parks, Miller Grove might be the perfect spot to call home.
