Star-filled sky and scenic views
When John Scharf's son visited Webster Township from New York, where he lives, the first thing he noticed was the clear, star-filled sky. "He doesn't see a sky like that in the city," says Scharf, the township's treasurer and a University of Michigan alumnus. "People move here for the peace, fresh air and proximity to Ann Arbor." Pastoral views, miles of farmland and the meandering Huron River are part of the community. "If anyone is interested in moving here, they should read our master plan, which is updated every five years to preserve the township's rural character," Scharf says. The community has a CAP Index crime score of 1 out of 10, which is significantly lower than the national average of 4.
Recreation includes kayaking, fishing and golfing
One of Webster Township's largest recreation areas is Independence Lake County Park, which is open throughout the year for hiking, disc golf and even ice fishing. In the summer, lifeguards monitor swimmers from the lake's sandy beach. Locals can also stay active at Hudson Mills Metropark, which lies just west of Webster Township. The park offers a range of outdoor activities, from golf and disc golf to kayaking and bass fishing. Hikers and bikers can also access miles of trails that wind toward downtown Dexter. During warmer months, tubing between Dexter-Huron and Delhi Metropark is another popular activity. Both parks are located near the southern edge of Webster Township.

Webster Fall Festival
The township's historic center is Webster Corners, located at the junction of Webster Church Road and Farrell Road. The area is lined with 1800s-era structures, including the original Podunk School House. At the end of September, residents gather at Webster Corners for the annual fall festival. This day-long event includes hayrides and petting zoos, as well as sheep herding demonstrations and a baseball game played by 1860s rules. Independence Lake also hosts a craft show around the same time.
An eclectic housing mix
In Webster Township, homebuyers choose from a variety of houses ranging in age, style and price. "The housing stock is an eclectic mix," says Cindy Glahn, a real estate agent with Real Estate One. "There are 100-year-old farmhouses sitting on large acreage, and newer subdivisions developed within the last five years where houses are on three-quarter-acre lots." Midcentury split-levels and ranch-style homes are often priced between $400,000 and $600,000. Newer Colonial Revival and traditional-style homes, as well as updated older homes on lots larger than an acre, may cost between $700,000 and $1.5 million.
