Dibble: rural through and through

Visitors know they’ve reached Dibble when they see the sign reading “Home of the Demons.” The Oklahoma Central Railway skipped this town in the early 1900s, leading the population to stagnate at a couple hundred locals. There’s been a recent rise to just under 900 residents in the main part of town, and more in new subdivisions and on rolling farmland in the surrounding area. “Dibble's a very small town – more like a farm town with southern, ‘more acreage’ type living,” says Sheri Phillips, Realtor with Choice Realty Metro Brokers of OK and longtime Dibble resident. “You won’t find many subdivisions in the Dibble area, at least that’s how it has been from past to present – it might change in the future. It has a couple of convenient stores and several churches. You still somewhat get that old-school living.”

Small-town country living in Dibble

Folks driving through Dibble pass sprawling fields dotted with cows. Ranch-style homes sit low to the ground on several acres of red Oklahoma dirt. Home and work coincide for Dibble residents, and it’s not uncommon to see chicken coops, pig pens and horse stables on properties even in the center of town. Others have built-in shops or shed space. Shrubbery sticks close to long front porches, and some homes are shaded by heavy patches of mature oak trees. Most homes range from $150,000 to $450,000, with prices correlating with the amount of acreage included. As residents drive further out on single-car country lanes and dirt roads, they pass empty lots available to build and harvest on ranging from just under an acre for $33,000 to 60 acres for $800,000.

Proud home of the Dibble Demons

This small community has a close-knit school district to match. Kids start at Dibble Elementary School, which earns a C-minus from Niche. From there, they move across the street to Dibble Middle School’s easy-to-spot domes; this school earns a C. Dibble High School – home of the much-loved Dibble Demons – earns a B-minus. Meanwhile, the Dibble Krakens compete in the Oklahoma Scholastic Esports League.

From Dibble to Norman and back

Dibble residents get everywhere by car or truck. State Highway 39, the town’s main thoroughfare, connects locals to Grady Memorial Hospital in 19.5 miles. Norman – a shopping hub for many residents – is 25 miles to the northeast, while Blanchard’s downtown shopping corridor is also just a 9-mile drive to the north. Visitors are welcomed at Will Rogers World Airport 31 miles away on Interstate 44.

Making the drive to shop and dine

“People are actually excited that a Dollar General recently came to town,” Phillips says. “That gets a lot of traffic from locals. Norman is where we go out to eat or for more serious shopping and things like that.” Small, family-owned businesses can be found in Dibble proper. Convenience stores like Kim and Kevin's Store or D J's Store give locals and passing truckers options for hot sandwiches and gas; the family that runs Crossroads Farm & Garden has been in the Dibble area for over 65 years. Blanchard’s downtown shopping corridor is also just a 9-mile drive to the north.

Visiting Dibble Town Park

Dibble Town Park’s playground, sheltered picnic tables and garden provide a tranquil spot for kids to play and adults to catch up with each other. A small ballpark also extends just beyond Town Hall. The mural-adorned Town of Dibble Community Center can be rented out for birthday parties and other events.

Football country

“We love football out here!” Phillips shares. “This year the team got into the quarter-finals and they were so close to beating the district champs. There’s a lot of love poured into that which I think comes from being born and bred to love it. Dibble residents are very involved in their small-town community.”

Proximity to fracking and resulting tremors

Dibble sits 9 miles from Cole, the site of a major hydraulic fracturing and injection facility. Human-induced rumbling has been reported in many of the communities surrounding this energy production epicenter.
