About eight miles from Galveston Bay, Dickinson is a small Texas town between Galveston and Houston. Dickinson’s residential areas make up most of the city and most of the neighborhoods are laid out in a grid around the city’s small downtown area. Dickinson is known for its seasonal light festival and its proximity to Galveston Bay, so residents interested in time on the water may find the city a desirable option.

Light shows and pajama parties

The Dickinson Festival of Life is held every year at Paul Hopkins Park. This festival brightens up the park every winter with Christmas-themed decorations and light sculptures along a walking path in the park. Gator’s Bar and Grill offers regularly scheduled fun events for the community, like pajama parties and murder mystery dinner events where patrons are served a meal along with a crime they’ll be able to solve over the course of an evening.

Dickinson Parks

Dickinson has two major green spaces, Roy Holbrook and Paul Hopkins parks. Paul Hopkins Park is set along the Dickinson Bayou, so residents can kayak on the water, visit the playground or sit under the picnic pavilion. Galveston Bay is a short drive away, and residents can head out to the water for kayaking, boating and fishing. Dickinson’s Barbeque & Southern Comfort is a popular centrally located eatery in Dickinson with a Western theme that fills the senses upon walking through the front doors. Gator’s Bar and Grill is a popular spot along Interstate 45, offering classic bar and pub food in a lively atmosphere. For groceries, residents can stop by the Kroger along I-45. For more shopping and dining, residents can head to the League City Shopping Center, about two miles up I-45 towards Houston. Residents can take advantage of big box stores in the shopping center, such as Target and Walmart, along with more food options, such as Cajun, Italian and Chinese cuisine.

The neighborhoods in the city’s west side tend to be part of newer developments, while the neighborhoods around downtown Dickinson tend to be older, more established areas.

Dickinson Independent School District

The city is served by the Dickinson Independent School District, which has 13 schools that serve grades Kindergarten-12. The district has a B rating on Niche and is the No. 3 school district in Galveston County, according to the site. Dickinson High School is the No. 6 school in Galveston and has a B rating. There are also private school options like the True Cross School, which serves grades K-8.

Getting around Dickinson

Cars are the primary method of transportation around Dickinson and beyond because there are no public bus or train lines in Dickinson. Interstate 45 runs through town and provides a route into Houston, which is about 30 miles away. Residents working in Houston can expect a 30-45 minute morning commute. The nearest major airport is the George Bush Intercontinental Airport, about 50 miles away.
