A small suburb beneath the Windy City

The accessible village of Dixmoor is 19 miles south of downtown Chicago, alongside the Little Calumet River. Locals enjoy affordable housing costs compared to surrounding neighborhoods and proximity to multiple forest preserves and recreational facilities. Dixmoor was established in 1922 and is nestled between the communities of Posen and Riverdale. Western Road serves as the neighborhood’s western boundary, and since 1915, it’s been used by entrepreneurs to connect with the less accessible northern populations of the Midwest. Locals enjoy a mix of suburban and rural lifestyles, with easy access to modern amenities and expansive parklands. Vernetta McCree, a 19-year broker and owner of McCree Realty & Associates, says, “People usually move to Dixmoor because their families and relatives live there, so there’s a lot of established community through that.”

Just north of the neighborhood is Dixmoor Playfield, where residents can enjoy a shaded picnic under an elm tree or use the park’s multi-use sports fields or basketball court. Briggs-Ellis Park features a playground, soccer fields, a paved walking path, and a picnic pavilion. “You can reach two of Cook County’s forest preserves within just a few minutes of leaving your house,” says Homero Garza, an 18-year Realtor with Charles Rutenberg Realty. Kickapoo Woods is just across Little Calumet River, where hikers can tread the 1-mile path through woodlands, prairies, and wetlands before launching a canoe or kayak for a serene drift down the river. A short drive north will bring you to Whistler Woods Forest Preserve, where you can access the 8-mile Major Taylor Trail for a day of hiking or cross-country skiing.

Midcentury staple homes at affordable prices

Walking along the neighborhood’s residential streets reveals brick ranches, New Traditional builds, Colonial Revivals, and manufactured homes. Most houses sit upon quarter-acre lots, and prices range from $80,000 for single-story mid-century homes to $200,000 for multi-story homes with modern interiors. Pedestrians frequent Dixmoor’s wide sidewalks, where familiar neighborhood faces pass one another. McCree mentions, “The houses here were mostly built in the 1960s; many of them hold three bedrooms and no basements, typical starter homes. Some older frames are fixer-uppers in need of interior restoration.”
