Quiet community in Kent County

About 4 miles south of Dover, Rising Sun-Lebanon offers suburban living with residential subdivisions tucked between acres of undeveloped farmland in Kent County. “South Dover tends to be a bit slower-paced. One of the things you’ll notice there is it’s very close to the Dover Air Force Base and very close to shopping, but it’s a bit quieter over there,” says Marcus Rush, a Realtor with the Rush Home team at Compass Real Estate. The St. James River winds along the community’s northern edge, separating Rising Sun-Lebanon from the Dover AFB and giving residents access to lush green spaces with opportunities for fishing and hiking. The community also sits between major thoroughfares like U.S. Route 13 and Delaware Route 1, and students attend the highly coveted Caesar Rodney School District.

New construction and traditional ranch-style homes

There are several subdivisions in Rising Sun-Lebanon, and most homes were built between the 1990s and the early 2020s. New Traditional homes have brick or vinyl exteriors with stone accents, and wide driveways lead to attached garages positioned at the front or the side of the house. Manicured lawns average just over a third of an acre, giving homeowners plenty of room for a fenced-in backyard with a pool or patio. Prices typically range from $400,000 to $790,000, and many subdivisions have HOAs that require residents to pay dues. Outside of these subdivisions, homebuyers will find older ranch-style homes built around the 1980s and ‘90s. These properties offer larger lots with several acres of land, and ranch-style homes sell for around $280,000 to $350,000.

Air Force JRTOC program at Caesar Rodney High School

Students may attend the Caesar Rodney School District, which Niche ranks as the best school district in Kent County. “Dover goes by school district when it comes to shopping for homes, and a lot of people come in looking for the Caesar Rodney School District,” Rush says. Kindergarteners can begin their education at the J. Ralph McIlvaine Early Childhood Center, which earns a B-plus from Niche. Allen Frear Elementary School scores an A, while F. Niel Postlethwait Middle School and Caesar Rodney High School both earn an A-minus. High schoolers can enroll in Rodney’s Air Force JROTC, a three-year program with an emphasis on aerospace science, leadership education and community service.

Playground, nature trail and fishing at Tidbury Creek Park

Tidbury Creek Park is less than 2 miles away, and the green space features a fenced-in dog park and a playground for kids to explore. A half-mile trail loops around Tidbury Pond, a popular fishing spot that the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control stocks with freshwater trout each spring. Tidbury Creek is a tributary of the St. Jones River, which runs along the northern edge of Rising Sun-Lebanon. Lebanon Landing is about a mile away, and its public boat ramp provides kayakers, canoers and paddle boarders with access to the St. James River. Less than 4 miles east of Rising Sun Lebanon is Jonathan’s Landing Golf Club, which features a public 18-hole course. About 4 miles south is the Kent County Public Library, which won the 2024 Library of the Year award from the Maryland-Delaware Library Association for its various programs and community outreach.

Local restaurants along Delaware Route 10

Delaware Route 10 bisects the community, and a small shopping plaza sits along the highway. Residents can get a manicure at Betu Nails or head to Hair Day, which serves as a neighborhood hair salon. Local favorites for dining include Restaurant 55, known for its rotating selection of craft beers and gourmet burgers. Cool Springs Fish Bar & Restaurant serves up fresh seafood platters, while Meryem’s Four Seasons Pizza offers a casual spot to grab pizza, wings and subs. For groceries, Redner’s is about a 3-mile drive away via DE 10.

Access to U.S. Route 13 and Delaware Route 1

Rising Sun-Lebanon sits between two major thoroughfares: U.S. Route 13 and Delaware Route 1. Both highways run north-south throughout the entire state, and DE 1 leads about 35 miles south to Delaware’s beaches and 55 miles north to Wilmington Airport. The Delaware Administration for Regional Transit, also known as DART, provides local bus service to the community with several stops along DE 10.

Annual peach festival celebrates Delaware’s agricultural history

Kent County boasts over 180,000 acres of farmland, and Delaware’s state flower, the peach blossom, honors the state’s long history of yielding peach orchards. The area’s rich agricultural history is celebrated each August at the Wyoming Peach Festival. The festivities take place about 4 miles from Rising Sun-Lebanon in the town of Wyoming and include live music, craft vendors and, of course, plenty of peach-themed desserts for residents to sample.

Proximity to the Dover Air Force Base

Residents are just 4 miles south of the Dover Air Force Base, the largest employer in Kent County and home to over 11,000 Airmen, joint service members and civilians. The base is split between the active duty 436th Airlift Wing, known as the Eagle Wing, and the reserve’s 512th Airlift Wing, known as the Liberty Wing. Each May, the First State Air Show invites locals to the base to watch as the United States Army Golden Knights fly overhead.
