A quiet suburb with an iron backbone, 40 miles from NYC
Built near one of the richest iron ore deposits in the area, Mine Hill Township, 40 miles from New York City, gets its name from the industry that supplied much of the iron ore used during the American Revolutionary War. Today, the dirt roads of the small mining town have been replaced by suburban streets and a close-knit community that remembers its history through celebrations, landmarks and recreational areas. “The town celebrated its 100th birthday recently,” says second-generation business owner Scott Esposito. He and his wife, Annette, run L&L Liquor, Deli and Catering on U.S. Route 46. “Mine Hill Beach was packed with people for the celebration. The whole community was there. Everyone knows each other and looks out for each other. People enjoy living here because they feel like part of a family.”
Mine Hill's single-family homes are surrounded by greenery
Single-family homes account for most of the houses in Mine Hill and are organized along winding streets in neat rows surrounded by thick swaths of forested trees and narrow sidewalks. Colonial Revival, bungalow, split-level and raised ranch-style homes are common and range from $310,000 to $740,000. Most homes were built in the 1960s, but a much older home, dating back to 1855, sits on Randolph Avenue as a small reminder of Mine Hill’s past. The Bridget Smith House Museum is an example of a multifamily miner’s home and displays everyday items and mining equipment from the 19th century. Mine Hill is proud of its history, and neighbors delight in sharing their community with visitors and new homebuyers. “When people move in close to us, my wife and I often knock on their door with food and a bottle of wine to introduce ourselves,” Esposito says. “It’s just who we are as a community.” The CAP Index crime score is a 2 out of 10, below the national average of 4.

Dickerson Mine site transformed into a natural area
The Dickerson Mine Preserve is an over 280-acre natural area, formerly the site of the 1710 Dickerson Mine, one of the area's largest iron ore mining operations in the area. It offers recreational facilities, such as the Dickerson Mine Trail, one of several walking and biking paths, and Mine Hill Beach on Sunset Lake, next to the preserve. Hedden County Park, too, features a central pond where visitors have access to a fishing deck, a playground, a shelter and a softball field. Elsewhere in the park are hiking trails and two trout-producing streams for anglers.

Shopping and dining near Mine Hill
Near three shopping complexes and home to several local businesses, Mine Hill has access to everything from big-box stores to small, locally owned eateries. Esposito's parents started Esposito’s L&L Deli & Liquor in 1968, and it has become a neighborhood institution where he says, “Everything is homemade.” Honoring the men and women who worked the historic iron mines, The Miner’s Apron at NJ Bar & Grill inhabits an 1854 building. Its diverse menu features everything from burgers and pasta to grilled tuna and steaks. Roxbury Mall and The Shops At Ledgewood Commons, 4 miles away, feature a collection of retailers and eateries including Kohl’s, McDonald’s and Walmart. Four miles to the west, Rockaway Townsquare hosts an AMC theatre, Target, JCPenney and other major retailers and eateries. The closest supermarket is Weis Markets in Randolph, 2 miles east.
Bender's Bagels on the Hill inspire a sense of freshness with their in-house baked bagels.
An Italian deli sandwich is one of the most popular items at L&L Deli.
L&L Liquor and Deli is a conveniently located store that can be easily accessed from Route 46.
NJ Bar & Grill's Miners Apron is a beloved spot for both locals and visitors.

Local pride celebrated on Mine Hill Day
Every September at Fireman’s Field, the town celebrates Mine Hill Day with food trucks, live music, fireworks and kiddie rides. “Everyone gets involved, especially the Mine Hill Ladies Auxiliary,” Esposito says. The town is also known for its Easter egg hunt, Memorial Day parade and townwide garage sale in June. Religious services are held at Mine Hill Presbyterian Church, Mar Thoma Church of New Jersey, Grace Church on the Mount and others in the area. On Saturdays, Mine Hill Presbyterian hosts a thrift shop in its basement. Some items are donated to those in need, and proceeds go toward the church and charitable causes.
Dover High School's robotics club
Mine Hill is served by two school districts: Mine Hill Township School District and the Dover Public School District. Mine Hill School District offers choice enrollment, which means children may attend schools outside their district. The only school in the Mine Hill Township District is Canfield Avenue School, which gets a B from Niche and serves kindergarten through sixth grade. Dover public schools include Dover Middle School, which gets a C and serves seventh and eighth grade, and Dover High School, which gets a B-minus. Dover High School’s robotics club, the CyberTigers, built four robots and won the 2021 Rookie Game Changer Award at the FIRST Robotics Competition, an international high school competition for robotics.
Dover High School inspires and educates over 1000 students in a single academic year.
Canfield Avenue School has been rated as a 'B' on niche.com.

Commuters use Dover train station
U.S. 46 passes through Mine Hill and connects with Interstate 80 about 5 miles northwest, leading to New York City. Residents can hop on a New Jersey Transit train at the Dover train station, less than 3 miles away, and get to New York’s Penn Station in 90 minutes. For medical services, Saint Clare’s Dover Hospital is 1 mile away. Using state Route 24, Newark Liberty International Airport is 31 miles away.
Important to know
While mining history can affect water quality, Mine Hill’s water is regularly tested and purchased from Morris County, which gets its supply from well fields in Randolph and Flanders Valley. Flooding is common in New Jersey, and lakes and rivers may flood during heavy rainfall.
