Quaint Philadelphia suburb with commuting benefits
On the western outskirts of Philadelphia, Drexel Park is a twelve-by-two-block neighborhood that attracts commuters looking to escape the bustle of the city 8 miles away and embrace a more suburban lifestyle. “There’s very low crime, good schools, and the pricing of the homes are lower than Havertown and the other towns around it,” says John Gallagher, a Realtor with RE/MAX Hometown who has lived in Drexel Park for 30 years. According to the CAP Index, Drexel Park receives a crime score of 2 out of a possible 10, which is lower than the national average of 4. Gallagher, who also grew up in the Drexel Hill area, says that he stayed in the community because he appreciates the single-family homes that make up Drexel Park and the close-knit relationships with his neighbors. “My neighbor is actually the doctor for the Eagles and the Flyers,” Gallagher adds, referring to two of Philadelphia’s professional sports teams. Residents can take advantage of the neighborhood's pedestrian-friendly streets and proximity to the city by walking to one of the multiple SEPTA trolley stops that line the south side of Drexel Park. And on the opposite side, Arlington Cemetery provides public green space.

Close-knit community with cottages and Colonial-styles
Pedestrian-friendly sidewalks line the gridded residential streets of Drexel Park, where front lawns of single-family homes are canopied by dogwood, cedar and poplar trees. One-story housing styles include cottage-like dwellings, while two- and three-story styles are mostly Colonial-inspired properties, some with decorative stone facades. Most homes feature detached garages and driveways. Price tags for these 2,000- to 4,000-square-foot houses typically range from $350,000 to $600,000. “Most of the bigger homes can have up to six bedrooms and three-and-a-half baths, and the highest prices I’ve sold are around $600,000,” Gallagher says. “You get way more house for your money out here.”
The community stays connected through the Drexel Park Homeowners Association, which requires a low annual membership fee for both renters and owners. “They have meetings once a month and drop off newsletters and other things in everyone’s mailboxes,” Gallagher says. “They’ll talk about what’s going on in the neighborhood, like the Fourth of July parade. Or someone might be hosting a wine tasting at their home.”

Local SEPTA trolley service into Center City
Residents can get around Philadelphia via the SEPTA light rail, locally known simply as “the trolley.” Depending on which end of the neighborhood they live in, they can use the stations at Drexel Hill, Irvington, Drexel Park and Lansdowne. Once aboard, passengers can head further west or to the 69th Street Transportation Center, which provides subway connections to Norristown, Philadelphia and Frankford. “Drexel Park was built for professionals going into the city using the trolley,” Gallagher says. The SEPTA bus system also services the area, with several bus stops along Lansdowne Avenue. U.S. Route 1 and State Route 3 intersect just north of Drexel Park, allowing for a 40-mile commute to Trenton and a 100-mile commute to New York City. There is also a bike lane from one end of the neighborhood to the other. Philadelphia International Airport is about 10 miles south.

Arlington Cemetery's seasonal Greenhorn Gardens
Drexel Park residents are within walking distance of Arlington Cemetery, which is about the same size as the neighborhood itself. In addition to being a well-known cemetery and funeral home, the site also features Greenhorn Gardens, a greenhouse and flower garden that is open from spring to fall. “They grow veggies, plants and different things,” Gallagher says. “And people will go into the cemetery and walk. There are people in there all the time.” To the east, Naylors Run Park has tennis courts, baseball fields, a playground and walking trails. Nearby, Lansdowne YMCA provides community members with fitness facilities and athletic clubs.
Drexel Park residents take pride in their green thumbs, with many planting beautiful gardens.

Casey’s is a locally adored bar and restaurant with American fare and live music on the weekends. “There’s also a ShopRite at Drexeline Shopping Center,” Gallagher adds, referring to the retail area less than 2 miles west of the neighborhood. “There are lots of grocery markets and other things all around us. People don’t have to go far to run errands.”
