A lakefront city center with numerous community events
Downtown Duluth adds something beyond convenience to its city-center reputation. Despite its small footprint, the neighborhood draws thousands of visitors each year . . . yes, even in winter. “Downtown Duluth is an event kind of city,” says Realtor Brok Hansmeyer of Re/Max Results. From Fourth Fest in July, to film festivals, art shows, beer fests, holiday lights and two marathons -- one on skates and one on foot -- city living means stepping out of a condo or apartment within walking distance of Lake Superior and a calendar full of things to do.

Fun abounds year-round in Downtown Duluth
Bayfront Festival Park is the spot for a lot of what Downtown Duluth has to offer. Alongside the harbor and St. Louis Bay, which adjoins Lake Superior, the park's biggest event annually is a holiday season festival with more than 5 million lights. From Thanksgiving to Christmas, crowds turn out for the event. “It’s the thing to do in December,” Hansmeyer said. Warmer weather carries its own brand of outdoor fun. “Every weekend in the summer, there’s an event, like Fourth Fest and Grandma’s Marathon,” says Hansmeyer of the race that brings 17,000 runners to town in June. An inline-skate marathon takes place in September. Bayfront Festival Park also boasts Duluth’s largest playground, where kids can explore the obstacle play area and swing sets. Families can reserve the space or hang out under the pavilion. Just a few hundred feet away sits the Great Lakes Aquarium, a massive attraction featuring an Amazonian species exhibit, otter cove and more. For a short break from the animals, folks can check out the onsite Merrill Lynch Fine Arts Gallery. Rotating, environment-inspired works from local artists are on view.

Condos and rentals list infrequently
Downtown Duluth’s housing blends in with its small businesses, parks and city blocks. Much of the inventory includes high-rise condominiums and multifamily apartment rentals overlooking Lake Superior. These range widely in price but are certainly more expensive than the single-family homes in the nearby suburbs, selling between $386,000 and $935,000. There are duplexes and townhomes, though these are available less often.

Sit-down restaurants are locally owned
Locally owned spots are the pride of downtown. “I think one of the most popular places to go downtown is Sir Benedict’s Tavern,” says Realtor Leila Wise of Coldwell Banker Realty. “It’s a great little English pub where you can order at the bar and have a gorgeous view of the lake.” Another popular sit-down restaurant where locals convene is Pickwick Restaurant and Pub. This steakhouse features a German-style interior ornate with oak moldings and barrels. “Inside the dining room, there are some giant stone fireplaces,” says Wise. Stocking up on groceries is just as unique an experience. Market Gourmet has jarred preserves, wines and kitchen gadgets.

Though a highly walkable neighborhood, the bus is an option
Downtown is highly walkable, but the Duluth Transit Authority makes it even easier to get around town, offering bus routes along 4th Street and 7th Street. These streets run parallel three blocks from each other, covering much of the immediate area. Riding the bus into Downtown Superior is a seven-mile trip that lasts about 35 minutes. Duluth International Airport lies nine miles in the opposite direction, also accessible by a long bus ride.
