From backyard to beach
Island life in the Park Point neighborhood depends on Duluth's Aerial Lift Bridge, the only link spanning the city's ship channel between the harbor and the open water of Lake Superior. Though connected to the mainland by the century-old marvel of engineering, Park Point itself is a natural beauty. In a tranquil space surrounded by water, locals enjoy scenery right from their homes. Decks and porches look out over Lake Superior, and locals stroll the time-worn footpaths from their back yards right to the beach.
Mike Raivala, a Re/Max real estate agent who has worked in the Duluth and Superior areas for 21 years, says Park Point is a popular summer escape for tourists as well. “It’s a well-known destination, but locals get to explore the outdoors in their backyards year-round,” Raivala said. “There’s hiking, sightseeing, bird-watching… really all the things people love about Lake Superior can be found at Park Point.”

Cottages, bungalows and beach houses
Park Point has a small but varied selection of homes that branch off Lake and Minnesota avenues, which run together along most of the narrow island, which is about 7 miles long and no more than 700 feet at its widest point. The lowest-priced houses are primarily bungalows and cottages with covered front porches, while pricier options include custom-built two-story beach houses with large decks to take in the sights. Houses are priced between $300,000 and $2 million—a wide spread, with the average price settling around $525,000.

Public beaches and parks
Public beaches fill with tourists during the summer, but locals need not worry about parking. They can walk directly down the dunes from their back yards to reach Lake Superior’s shores. Aside from beach access, which is shared by residents, there are several public parks in the neighborhood. Lafayette Square was established in the early 1900s as the home of Radisson Elementary School and later renovated into a community center. Today, the park has playgrounds, tennis courts, a large sports field, a community garden and a small parking lot for visitors.
The Park Point Beach and Beach House is a public park near the south end of Lake-Minnesota Avenue. It offers beach access, beach volleyball, an accessible boat launch and a community center. The center can be rented for weddings, family reunions and social events. The park’s website shows current weather, UV and wave conditions, as well as swim hazard risk flags and a beach cam, giving beachgoers ample detail on each day’s conditions.
A trail along the eastern “point” that gives the neighborhood its name leads to Minnesota Point Lighthouse. Known as one of the easier hikes in the Duluth area, this trail is mostly flat and protected from wind, with views of the lake and bay. At the end of the trail, check out the historic lighthouse (from afar, as visitors are not allowed inside) and watch ships float through the Superior Entry, a natural waterway between Minnesota and Wisconsin. There is no access across Superior Entry to the next island in the chain.

Dinner like Grandma made it
While Park Point doesn’t have any restaurants within its boundaries, a quick trip across the Aerial Lift Bridge provides options, including Lake Avenue Restaurant & Bar. This New American restaurant serves brunch, lunch and dinner paired with regional cocktails. It’s known as a local go-to for celebrations. A more casual choice can be found down the street at Grandma’s Saloon & Grill. With eclectic décor and neon signs, this laid-back spot is known for its homestyle chicken pot pie and Wisconsin-style white cheddar cheese curds.
Sand Point Yacht Club, a private club on the Duluth harbor basin, has a recently remodeled clubhouse equipped with a full kitchen. Members regularly enjoy days spent boating before returning to the clubhouse to cook and share a meal with neighbors. Farther down Lake-Minnesota Avenue, Dock 5 displays the work of local artist Natalija Walbridge — or shop for that perfect piece to take home. The nearest grocery store is Whole Foods, located in the Hillside neighborhood 1.6 miles north of the Aerial Lift Bridge, accessible by car or via DTA’s Green Line bus route.
Even though Park Point has few retail and dining options within its borders, Raivala says it’s hard to run out of things to do within a short trip. “With Superior, Wisconsin, just across the river, and downtown Duluth within walking distance, people can easily shop and eat without going far from home,” says Raivala.

Buses and bridges
The Duluth Transit Authority (DTA) provides bus service throughout downtown. There are several stops in Park Point—closest to the bridge is the Lake Avenue & 8th Street stop, then stops continue every few blocks until the Lake-Minnesota Avenue & 49th Street stop completes the route, ending at the Park Point Beach House.
Leaving Park Point by car or bus requires crossing the Aerial Lift Bridge, which remains open to road traffic unless marine traffic requests passage. “The bridge operator coordinates transit with boat captains by radio and ensures that car traffic doesn’t get stuck for too long,” says Hannah Montoya, a park ranger at the Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center & Museum. “Typically, they do a partial lift, but sailboats with tall masts require a full lift. Once the bridge is at the very top, it takes two minutes to go down again. People aren’t usually stuck waiting on the road for longer than five to ten minutes.”
Park Point residents and visitors can utilize the public bus system.
