A community aptly named and well-equipped for fun
The St. Louis River bends like a crescent against the shores of south Duluth. One of the neighborhoods it touches along the way is Riverside, an area comprised mostly of forests and ski runs on Grand Avenue’s west side. The east side is residential, with two pockets of streets no more than 1,000 feet from the waterfront. “It’s kind of a quiet little residential suburb in Duluth,” says Realtor Beverly J. Van Alstine of Re/Max Results. “As far as what people are into, some of the local parks and the lake are nice positives for the area.” Duluth is also known for its mountains, which are a welcome sight for winter skiers, summer thrill-seekers and lovers of rolling-terrain views.

Spending time outdoors, no matter the weather
Riverside Park is just north of the residential enclave, small but big enough for informal sports or a picnic. The park also includes a playground. The Spirit Lake Marina & RV Park allows motorhomes to park adjacent to two 175-foot-wide boat docks. In addition to its 100 boat slips, the marina rents canoes and kayaks. West of Riverside’s homes is the vast stretch of Duluth’s forests, across which winds the Superior Hiking Trail, known for its constant elevation changes.
Spirit Mountain is a popular destination year-round. When summer arrives, locals can ride the Timber Twister alpine coaster through the woods or strap into the Timber Flyer zip line and explore the treetops. Mountain biking also is a summer-time activity, on trails used in the winter by skiers. Winter snowfalls bring skiers and snowboarders to the slopes, with Nordic skiing being a particularly sought-after pastime. The Duluth Cross Country Ski Club and the city of Duluth pitched in to create the Spirit Mountain Nordic Center. This northern section of the skiing campus has a mile and a half of trails dedicated to Nordic skiing, with more on the way.
Visit the Adventure Park and take a ride on the Alpine Roller Coaster.
The Williard Munger State Trail runs parallel to Grand Ave.
Riverside attracts the outdoor enthusiast.

Older homes on tiny lots
Fewer than 10 streets of 20th-century housing intersect on the edge of the St. Louis River. Traditional and cottage-style homes are clustered on lots averaging less than one-tenth of an acre. On average, these homes sell between $160,000 and $220,000. More cottages and ranch-style homes are available a bit farther south along Grand Avenue. Because they’re closer to the water, pricing creeps a bit higher, with homes fetching between $170,000 and $400,000.
Most of the homes in Riverside are close to the waterfront.

Few restaurants in town
Residents’ opportunities to go shopping or for a meal are limited. The two restaurants immediately within the neighborhood are Grand Avenue Chalet’s Riverside Bar and Grill and Skyline Chalet’s Moosehead Saloon. Both restaurants are part of the Spirit Mountain experience, serving quick bites and burgers. Farther up Grand Avenue yields another sit-down spot, Tappa Keg Inn. This tiny diner has classics like fish 'n’ chips and prime rib. Groceries are a more difficult ask, as the nearest Super One Foods is three miles northeast along Grand Avenue.
Riverside Bar and Grill is located at the base of Spirit Mountain.
Tappa Keg Inn offers an Italian and American menu and a wide selection of beer and wine.
Stop by the new Burnett Dairy for cheese, wine, beer and spirits or a tasty meal.
