A small Maine town with lots of space to breathe

Located in northern Cumberland County, Pownal offers stretches of dense Maine forests and country pastures interspersed with New England cabins and farmhouses. “People look at Pownal because you just can breathe out here and enjoy peace and quiet and ruralness, but yet your neighbor will run right around the corner and help you,” says Becky Taylor-Chase, Pownal’s Town Administrator. She adds, “It’s that neighbor-helping-neighbor kind of feel here.” With several local cattle farms, Bradbury Mountain State Park and close-knit community gatherings at Mallett Hall, Pownal offers residents an easygoing lifestyle.

Ranches and farmhouses on multiple acres

Pownal homes are spaced apart from one another on multiple acres along quiet country roads. “People usually have between five and ten acres,” Taylor-Chase says. “It’s always strange when I pull a file and see a property with just two or two and a half.” Properties are nestled into the dense Maine forests or on large swathes of cleared grass fields and appear in classic New England styles. Homebuyers can find Cape Cod and Colonial Revival houses built in the 1950s and 60s priced between $250,000 and $450,000. Ranch-style homes from the 1990s on seven acres cost around $600,000, while sprawling farmhouses built in the last 20 years on large lots can cost as much as $800,000.

Hike the summit trail at Bradbury Mountain State Park

Extending from the eastern edge of Pownal is Bradbury Mountain State Park, a popular outdoor destination for locals and tourists alike. The park features 21 miles of nature trails, including the summit trail, which offers sweeping views of Casco Bay. The trail network allows visitors to explore the wilderness on foot, but they can also mountain bike, snowmobile or go horseback riding. Pownal’s peaceful countryside is also ideal for sky-gazing — Blueberry Pond Observatory offers guided views of the night sky through a robotic telescope and camera. Residents already live in a laidback, rural environment, but if they’re seeking an outdoor staycation, there are campsites at Bradbury Mountain State Park and an eclectic wooden Hobbit House at Tir na nOg Farm.

Farm-fresh meat and eggs from Hidden Ledge Farm

For some locally raised meat, residents can check out Hidden Ledge Farm, a local barnyard that sells eggs, beef and pork at its farmstand. Pownal also houses Tir na nOg Farm, a Celtic farm with grazing highland cattle and an organic garden; residents can contact the farm directly to buy goods year-round. Locals can drive 7 miles to Freeport to find a larger selection of grocery and household items at Shaw’s. Freeport is also where they’ll find an array of retail outlet stores at the Freeport Village Station and local restaurants along U.S. Route 1. Nighthawk’s Kitchen serves burgers and fries, and residents can walk next door to sip on a pint at the Mast Landing Brewing Company Taproom. For a selection of Italian and Greek fare in a comfortable environment, there’s Antonia’s Pizzeria.

Support artists at the Bradbury Mountain Arts Show

Though residents must head to Freeport for larger events, like L.L. Bean’s summer concert series or the Freeport Fall Festival, the town of Pownal hosts close-knit community events at the town hall. The recreation committee hosts community craft nights at Mallett Hall, and there’s the Pownal Pumpkin Festival in October. On a weekend in November, the annual Bradbury Mountain Arts Show showcases local artists.

Car-dependent country roads in Pownal

“A lot of commuters live here, but there are also tons of people who work from home,” Taylor-Chase says. Even though Pownal is a bit off the beaten path, it is not secluded. Residents only drive 7 miles northwest to Freeport and 9 miles south to Yarmouth. Portland, which is the largest city in Maine, is 24 miles south. State highways wind through the neighborhood and link with Interstate 295 east of Pownal.

Residents in rural Pownal travel out-of-town for resources

There are fewer resources in Pownal, so locals must drive out of town to access medical centers and supermarkets. The nearest hospital is Maine Medical Center, which is 20 miles away in Portland.
