A north Durham neighborhood with homes, shops and restaurants

Stretching northward from Interstate 85 for nearly 3 miles, Omah Street is a north Durham neighborhood that shifts in character from end to end. Close to the interstate, an apartment complex sits between commercial and industrial businesses. Heading north, long blocks of single-family homes blend into townhouse communities, filling the space between shopping centers and an elementary school. The rest is mostly undeveloped land. This variety draws in homebuyers with different budgets and wish lists. “It’s a very convenient location,” says Jeanette Hussey, a lifelong Durhamite, whose West & Woodall Real Estate office neighbors the community. “In northern Durham, you get a little bit larger lot sizes. So, people looking here want a little bit more space.”

Single-family homes on large lots near Interstate 85

Omah Street offers homebuyers a variety of home styles and price points. Townhouses, which range in design from 1970s contemporary to late 1990s traditional, cost between $155,000 and $240,000. These communities have monthly homeowner association fees of around $140. Along lengthy blocks with wide streets and mature trees are most of the neighborhood’s stock of detached homes, built as early as the 1940s and as recently as the late 1980s. These minimal traditional, Cape Cod, split-level and ranch-style homes rest on grassy lots that can exceed a half-acre. Spacious front yards feature manicured garden beds and flowering shade trees. Driveways, either concrete or gravel, sometimes lead into garages and carports. Prices start at $230,000 and can reach $490,000.

Hillandale and Guess Roads have national chains and local flavor

Omah Street residents don’t have to drive far for a bite to eat or to pick up groceries. Retail strips line Hillandale and Guess Roads, the neighborhood’s west and east boundaries. Harris Teeter, Food Lion and familiar national retailers draw shoppers to the Willowdaile and Cross Creek shopping centers. At Croasdaile Commons, Bleu Olive is a date night spot for contemporary Mediterranean dishes, while traditional Mexican fare is on the menu at El Corral a few doors down. Locally loved neighborhood businesses include Deep Roots Natives, a garden center on a mission to provide everyday homeowners access to native plant species, and Crafts & Drafts, a self-described DIY bar and bottle shop where customers let out their inner artist with self-guided craft kits while enjoying a pint of beer or a glass of wine.

The Durham Lions Club hosts an annual Pancake Jamboree

The Durham Lions Club calls Omah Street home. The service-based community organization, which has been meeting in its building along Hillandale Road since 1975, hosts Girl Scout and Boy Scout troops, birthday parties and corporate retreats. Its long-running Pancake Jamboree fundraiser, held on Election Day, has members flipping pancakes all day long at the Durham Armory downtown. The money raised supports the group’s various projects helping the visually impaired and area families in need.

Parks in north Durham include West Point on the Eno Park

While no parks are within Omah Street, several green spaces are a short drive away. The Warren Creek Trail passes through Whippoorwill Park, home to tennis courts, baseball fields and a playground hidden among woods. Valley Springs Park is a destination for disc golf, while dog owners frequent Rock Quarry Park, which has nature trails that connect to the Museum of Life and Sciences. Visitors walk through nature and history at Duke Homestead, a historic farm owned by tobacco tycoon Washington Duke in the 1800s. West Point on the Eno Park offers riverside hikes to popular summer swimming holes. “People walk around and go stand in the river,” Hussey says. More outdoor adventures, from camping to fishing, are nearby at Eno River State Park, about 6 miles west of the neighborhood. Golfers have three courses close by, including the public Hillandale Golf Course.

Public and private schools near Omah Street have high ratings

Durham Public Schools, which earns a B-plus overall rating from Niche, offers some school choice through an application lottery. Hillandale Elementary is in the neighborhood and receives a B-minus rating, while George L. Carrington Middle gets a C-plus. The B-plus-rated Riverside High offers an engineering pathway. Excelsior Classical Academy, a B-rated public charter school, and Triangle Day School, a private Kindergarten through 8th grade school not yet rated by Niche, are nearby alternatives.

Driving, riding a bus and biking are all ways to get around Bull City

With Interstate 85 serving as Omah Street’s southern boundary, the neighborhood has quick access to Durham’s highway system, which connects the city to communities across the Research Triangle region. Research Triangle Park, a major employment hub with hundreds of companies, is roughly a 13-mile drive, while Raleigh-Durham International Airport is about a 17-mile drive. Downtown Durham is around 5 miles away and can be reached by bus, with GoDurham bus stops dotting Hillandale and Guess Roads, two bike-friendly streets.
