Willowhaven is a family-friendly golf course community in north Durham
As the Eno River hugs Durham’s northwestern city limits, it passes by the established neighborhood of Willowhaven. This community was built around the Umstead Pines Golf & Swim Club, which was first called Willowhaven Country Club when crews broke ground in the late 1950s. Today, it’s known for being an accessible golf community for young families. “It’s not one of those $25,000 buy-in clubs,” says Jeanette Hussey, a Realtor with West & Woodall Real Estate. The Durham native describes the club as very social. “They have dinners twice a week for members. They have golf tournaments. They do a great job with activities for the kids.” Along with the golf club, residents enjoy spacious properties and quick access to Eno River State Park. There’s also a low risk of crime. Willowhaven receives a CAP Index crime score of 1 out of 10, well below the national average of 4.

A neighborhood golf club, Eno River State Park and other green spaces
The beating heart of Willowhaven is the family-friendly golf and swim club it was built around: Umstead Pines at Willowhaven. With a semi-private 18-hole golf course designed by George Cobb that flows over hills and winding creek, golf is a primary pastime here. The men’s and women’s golf associations hold tournaments throughout the year. The club’s outdoor pool is a summer hotspot, hosting the Willowhaven Wave swim team and a vibrant Fourth of July bash. Tennis players of all skill levels better their game at the lakeside clay courts.
Valley Springs Park offers one of the nearest playgrounds. Along with ballfields, the park is popular for its tree-shaded disc golf course, playable during sweltering North Carolina summers. While most of the wooded trails, campsites and fishing areas at Eno River State Park are less than 5 miles west of Willowhaven, the neighborhood’s border rests against the park and has an access point for the Dunnagan Trail off Continental Drive.
