Amenity and arbors close to Syracuse
The verdant suburb of Lyndon is just 7 miles outside Syracuse, burrowed between the hubs of Fayetteville and DeWitt. “Lyndon Corners is a bustling hub, right off a six-lane highway,” says Realtor Mary K. Barbano with Howard Hannah Real Estate Services. “Along Genesse Street, it’s very commercial. There is a Wegmans where everyone shops and several other stores. The residential area begins further down Route 5.” Once away from the commercial hub, the community borders the Erie Canal and has several natural areas, parks and golf courses. Lyndon’s residential area features mostly 20th-century homes on large lots, adding to its relaxed, suburban feel.
Comfortable homes on large lots
For the most part, Lyndon’s homes are built on quiet residential roads, well off busier streets like NY 5 and E. Genesee. Many are built atop hills and surrounded by lush greenery in the summertime. Neighborhoods here rarely conform to the image of a suburban lifestyle. Instead, houses are spaced out on large lots with clear property lines. There are no sidewalks in the residential areas. Instead, neatly trimmed lawns extend to tree-lined roads. Most of these homes—primarily split-levels, Cape Cods, colonials and ranch-style—were built amid the post-World War II suburban boom. Paul Mandelis, president of G & J Home Remodeling, which is based in Lyndon, says these older homes have a lot of character to them. Colonial homes vary in price from $325,000 to $750,000. Newer, custom-built houses along Onondaga Golf and Country Club can run more than $1 million. Lyndon has a notably low crime score of 2 out of 10 on the CAP Index.

Although New York’s Centro bus system provides stops for Lyndon residents along Highway 5, the area remains car dependent. “The local government did put sidewalks in a few years back, but nobody really walks because there’s no place to walk to—the sidewalks don’t lead anywhere,” says Barbano.
