East Brookfield is a lake town just a quick drive away from Worcester
Just 15 miles south of Worcester, East Brookfield may be nicknamed “Baby Town” for its barely 100-year-old incorporation, but it still exudes classic New England charm. Lined with vintage, green lampposts and Colonial Revival-style storefronts, Massachusetts Route 9, locally known as Main Street, spans the 300-acre Lake Lashaway. “It’s spring and river-fed, so the water is crystal clear,” says Jim Lovett, a Realtor with Century 21, who is also an East Brookfield local. “Brookfield is separated into four different very distinct towns. East Brookfield is known as the lake one.” Locals can watch fireworks reflect from their docks every Fourth of July and view water skiers and sailboat races from a lakefront restaurant all summer long. Quaboag Pond is another nearby lake, and Wells State Park’s 700 acres of evergreen forests are less than 10 miles south.

Century-old homes on Main Street and Lake Lashaway cottages
Though a few late 1800s Colonial Revivals and stick-style dwellings populate the asphalt sidewalks along Main Street, most of East Brookfield’s housing was developed throughout the mid- 20th century surrounding Lake Lashaway. Loblolly pine trees shade gravel driveways leading to clapboard cottages on grassy, unfenced quarter-acre lots backing up to long fishing piers. Pontoons tied to wooden docks sit behind three-bedroom Cape Cods and the occasional split-level. Lovett says houses around Lake Lashaway typically belong to permanent residents rather than vacationers. Buying here costs between $250,000 and $450,000, a range similar to a Brookfield home’s average $400,000 selling price.

Lake Lashaway beach access, Quaboag Pond fishing and Wells State Park hiking
Picnic tables and a volleyball net dot Lake Lashaway’s public beach off Sylvania Grove. White Y Flyers race across the lake every summer Sunday morning when the Lake Lashaway Sail Club meets. With a maximum depth of 18 feet, the waterway is a popular spot for ice skaters and ice fishers when it freezes. Known for its supply of northern pike, Quaboag Pond is another nearby body of water with a public fishing boat launch off Quaboag Street. Beginning in June, kids canoe, swim and shoot bows and arrows along the eastern shoreline for the YMCA Camp Frank A. Day. To the west, Oakholm Farm Estate’s 12 red and white barns and 150 acres of rolling terrain host seasonal farm activities. Locals cut down balsam fir trees and enjoy horse-drawn carriage rides around Christmas, while summer is the season for picking blueberries and raspberries. Starting at nearby Wells State Park, locals can hike, bike or cross-country ski across nearly 6 miles of trailway to reach the top of Hitchcock Mountain in East Brookfield. Sixty campsites for RVs and tents surround the state park’s Walker Pond, where campers can swim, pontoon and fish for around a dozen species, like largemouth bass or white perch.

East Brookfield’s Annual Fourth of July Parade
On the Fourth of July, Main Street shuts down in the morning as children ride bikes decorated in red, white and blue for the annual parade. Known for youth baseball diamonds, Connie Mack Field is where the celebration continues at night. Locals can play carnival games, eat cotton candy and bring blankets to enjoy the fireworks show.

Waterfront restaurants, locally owned bars and farmstands along Main Street
Locals can drive their boats to the aluminum docks outside 308 Lakeside and enjoy seafood, sandwiches and burgers on the covered patio as the sun sets. Across the street, Boston Celtics and Red Sox memorabilia adorn the walls of Shi’s Pub. A 1950 Chevy pick-up truck converted into a stage hosts country musicians every weekend at Timberyard Brewing. To celebrate the town’s anniversary in May, the Baby Town Bolt 7K begins and ends at the brewery, allowing runners to reward themselves with one of the 16 German-style beers on tap. Greenhouses filled with perennials sit behind Petruzzi Farm’s storefront, offering produce like corn, squash and tomatoes from May until October. Year-round groceries are available at Big Y World Class Market. More shopping options like Price Chopper and CVS are only 3 miles east in Spencer, also home to Harrington Healthcare, the nearest hospital.

Route 9 connects East Brookfield to Worcester
“You’re central to so many cities, like Hartford, Spencer and Boston. But most people are going to work in Worcester. Many people move here from Worcester to escape the city,” says Lovett. Massachusetts Route 9 spans the area’s core, making Worcester a 15-mile drive east. The Worcester Regional Transit Authority has multiple bus stops along the same thoroughfare, offering rides throughout the metropolitan area. Boston is 70 miles east, and the Connecticut border is roughly 17 miles south.
