Suburban Neighborhood in Rhode Island
Kent County 02818, 02886
East Greenwich has many claims to fame. For starters, it’s the birthplace of the Navy. During the early 19th century, it served as one of the capitals of Rhode Island. But today it’s more known for having a pleasant ambiance.
“It's close to the downtown district, which is a great place to enjoy shopping and entertainment,” says Realtor Elizabeth Kirk. “Plus, you have the waterfront.”
If you're on the lookout for properties near Greenwich Bay, prices start in the middle $700,000s. You’ll find midcentury Colonial styles built with mixed materials, situated on quarter acre lots with tasteful landscaping. These homes are certainly for the homebuyer who desires a classic aesthetic and old-fashioned suburbia: while not connected by sidewalks, they offer a peaceful and walkable community.
Further inland prices increase to the middle $800,000s. This reflects the addition of a few key amenities. For example, lots are often an entire acre or more. You’ll also see relatively newer construction from the late 80s or early 90s, placed in a modern setting of sidewalk suburbia. Still, the styles are consistent with what you’ll find near the water.
But if you’re looking for something a little more against the grain in terms of style and price, check out the area near Hawley Farm. Here you’ll find homes built in 2023, starting in the low $600,000s. These exude a Craftsman style, with bold contrasting colors, bay windows and attached garages that approach the street.
On the east end near the waterfront, Route 1 —also known as Post Road— is your main thoroughfare for getting around. You can take this into downtown East Greenwich and find yourself at Dante’s Kitchen, which serves up shrimp tacos and pulled pork hash in a rustic setting. On the west end you’ll find Interstate 95, which gets you to Providence in about 20 minutes. Use this to reach everyday essentials like Dave’s Fresh Marketplace and big box retailers like Lowe’s.
Schools are a major draw to East Greenwich. Meadowbrook Farms Elementary enrolls over 300 students at the PK-2 level. Niche awarded it an overall grade of A. Children in grades 3-5 attend George Hanaford Elementary, where they’re joined by nearly 300 of their peers. This school was also awarded an A from Niche. Cole Middle serves 600 students in grades 6-8, and maintains the winning streak for local schools with an overall A from Niche. East Greenwich High enrolls nearly 800 students in grades 9-12. It, too, earned an overall A from Niche – and in 2015, Newsweek ranked it the best school in Rhode Island.
Easy access to nature is another incentive for moving to the area. Along trails near the bay you can go fishing or looking for clams. Goddard Memorial State Park is a popular retreat, too: across 400 acres you can observe trees that come from all over the world. There’s also a 9-hole golf course, equestrian course and a performing arts center.
East Greenwich has a lot of historical cred, and it remains a relevant place to live in the modern world.
