About East Islip, NY

A casual, friendly nautical hamlet on Long Island’s south shore

East Islip, a hamlet on the south shore of Long Island, is the kind of place that is hard to let go. And given that it is surrounded by water and green spaces and offers attractive homes, great schools and invested residents, it’s easy to understand why. “We’re a very casual, very friendly town,” says Debbie Carpluck, a Realtor with Keller Williams Realty Elite who proudly boasts that she is East Islip born and raised. “Living on the water gives it that nautical feel. It’s a great vibe. As my mother likes to say, ‘We’re a community of homing pigeons and boomerangs.’ Many of us East Islip graduates come back to stay in the community we grew up in. It’s such a special little place.”

Several non-profits organize community events

Because so many residents are intimately connected to their town, it results in an active and engaged population. “We’re a very charitable community,” Carpluck says. “We do a lot of work with EJ Autism, one of the many foundations started by community members, as well as For the Kids and Taylor’s Hope.” The Jigsaw Run is an annual community event put on by EJ Autism, a non-profit started by an East Islip family of two autistic boys. For the Kids is a non-profit formed by a group of East Islip volunteers that helps raise money for the school district. Taylor’s Hope Organization was formed by the parents of an East Islip girl who has been battling cancer since she was diagnosed at age 8. The non-profit organizes events such as an annual Blue Ribbon Dinner and holiday toy drive to support children battling cancer and raise funds for and awareness of histiocytosis. Those efforts are just a part of a constantly active community. “We have carnivals at Brookwood Hall Park, and the Chamber of Commerce puts on a lot of summer concerts there,” Carpluck says. “Oh, and we have a huge St. Patrick’s Day parade on Main Street. It’s one of our best events, and people come out after a long winter to see their friends. There’s always something going on.”

Wide variety of housing ranges from the low $400,000s to more than $2 million

Divided into appealing subdivisions such as Deer Run and Country Village, the primarily residential hamlet offers a wide variety of homes along picturesque neighborhood streets where it is not uncommon to see white picket fences gracing large front yards. Cape Cods, Colonials, raised ranch and traditional split-level homes are common among a varied collection of established housing, which features a large number of modern renovations. The typical home includes a private driveway on a spacious lot, and newer homes also come standard with attached garages. The hamlet’s largest and most expensive homes are near the water. Prices typically range from the low $400,000s for an established home inland to more than $2 million for the largest luxury homes with waterfront access. Alternative options include condominiums at Foxgate and townhouses at Hecksher Estates typically priced in the mid-$400,000s. The hamlet also includes co-op living units starting in the mid-$200,000s at Bel Laurel, a 55-plus community.

Students can attend top-rated public schools in and around the community

The East Islip Union Free School District is rated A-minus by Niche. John F. Kennedy and Timber Point elementaries, both B-plus-rated schools, are located in the hamlet. East Islip Middle and East Islip High schools, both rated A-minus, share a campus in Islip Terrace, the hamlet’s neighbor to the north. “Schools are the biggest draw for this area,” says Carpluck, who adds that sports and music are what the schools are known for. Former NFL quarterback Boomer Esiason is an East Islip High graduate. The East Islip Music and Arts Program develops creative talent through music ensembles, theater performances, visual art and photography. In 2023, the National Association of Music Merchants Foundation recognized the district’s music instruction and curriculum with a “Best Community for Music Education” award. St. Mary School, a PK-8 Catholic institution located in the hamlet, offers a private educational option.

Recreational options are plentiful among the community’s natural landscape

East Islip offers more access to the natural landscape than your typical Long Island hamlet. Boaters can operate out of marinas located along Champlin Creek and on the hamlet’s southern edge at East Islip Marina Park. Both locations provide easy access to the open waters of Great South Bay. The park also includes Town Beach, a fishing dock, a playground and athletic fields for softball and lacrosse. Next door is Hecksher State Park, a sprawling recreational complex whose amenities include 4 miles of paved trails for bike riders and nature lovers, a disc golf course, a skate park, picnic areas, canoe and kayak launches and several bayfront beaches. The South Shore Nature Center, a 200-care preserve is an added natural attraction. Brookwood Hollow Park, anchored by a historic mansion, is home to more athletic spaces and children’s playscapes along Champlin Creek.

Main Street offers an array of locally owned businesses

The hamlet’s Main Street is a notable attraction, a convenient commercial corridor that runs through the heart of town. “We have some wonderful businesses,” Carpluck says, “from grocery stores to gourmet markets to coffee shops, and they’re all locally owned.” Several popular dining destinations are concentrated along the corridor. Hometown Cafe is a highly rated American eatery that serves up comfort food favorites in a charming diner-style atmosphere. Vinnie’s Mulberry Street is a traditional Italian restaurant that features brick oven pizzas and classic Italian dishes. Shandon Court, an Irish restaurant known for its Sunday brunch and live music, is a hamlet institution. Entertainment options along Main Street include Bayway Arts Center, whose theatrical performances and concerts highlight a busy year-round schedule of events, and East Islip Lanes, which offers fun for all ages with competitive bowling leagues and late-night “Rock N Glow Bowl” on Saturdays.
